Finally got an RTX card, questions about RT settings
I've only tested RT so far in Resident Evil 4, where it evidently affects just the surface reflections (and IMO doesn't always do a great job of it), and Elden Ring, where it seems to only affect shadows.

I'll be looking into more games where the setting is available, but with these two I had a hard time understanding the difference between the low-med-high RT quality. What exactly should I be looking at to see the difference?

Also, RT in Elden Ring in particular made me raise an eyebrow. While the additional shading effect is definitely noticeable especially in dense foliage, it's something that I've seen many times before with good quality ambient occlusion settings.

So I'm just wondering how many games REALLY benefit from improved lighting and not just local effects here and there like the two aforementioned games. I know Cyberpunk is one, but any others?

Ray tracing is just a hyped up gimmick. I can barely tell the difference on or off. Maybe if I stared at screenshots? Certainly not worth any amount of money or time.
I find it funny still that some last generation GTX can use Ray in the slightest. Mostly the Titans...

Most games will not use Ray. Many developers are still using GTX. :p

You will have to check the settings as all systems handle RT differently.

Difference is night and day in Cyberpunk
" What exactly should I be looking at to see the difference?"

Try Lego: Builder's Journey, Cyberpunk 2077, or Control, or Metro Exodus to see real differences.

Night and day? Since you made me laugh I'm going to imply you're joking. That's a huge exaggerated statement. Definitely not "night and day".

It's not even night and day in screenshots let alone gameplay. Who's going to walk around and stare at puddles?

The fact is this technology is hyped up garbage that's designed to target people wearing green glasses.

nah, i don't bother playing with rt in any game, the visual difference is not worth the performance hit

Control.
Because everybody was hyping RT there I was personally very disappointed. It’s basically changing frosted office windows into mirrors and put more polish on the floor.
It’s different but not much better IMHO. Not when considering a massive FPS tax.

My personal favourite example of Ray Tracing is in Witcher 3. Especially realistic real time shadows on people’s faces.
You may not notice it at first but when you switch RT off the game looks like it’s made of plastic.

Well yes and no.

If we talk business perspective where Nvidia marketing tries to make it look like the second coming and putting unreasonable pricetags on their cards - then yeah sure.

However reflections DEFINITELY benefit a lot. I distinctly remember being at awe from the visuals in 2019's Resident Evil 2 remake that looked pretty much flawless, except those ugly screen-space reflections that would take you right out of the immersion.

Either way I got the RTX card for DLSS first and foremost, now that is a proper revolutionary technology. Playing Battlefield in 1440p while the system renders it at just 720p allows me to comfortably increase other graphics settings.

Ah yes, Control too. The difference in reflections and lighting is quite noticeable, I'd say it's the one game that showcases the technology quite well

Good for you?
Runs great. 70fps maxed out on my PC at 1440p DLSS-Q

right, and i play in 4k 120+ fps no dlss as dlss lowers your internal resolution and then upscales it

rt is marginal garbage

You're most welcome to stick to enjoying old videogames with rasterized graphics.

I prefer watching and playing things that look actually good. Avatar: The Last Airbender netflix live action comes to mind.

Want to know something cool about it?
It uses path tracing ;)

oh man, this is hilarious

rt in movies and shows has been used since 1979, they're prerendered
Reflections are where I find ray-tracing most obviously beneficial, esp. in Control and Cyberpunk.

But yeah, ray-tracing is seriously over-hyped otherwise.

He's not wrong.

Ray Tracing in film has been around for half a century. It's only becoming relevant to gaming in recent years as an active effect rather than used for pre rendering in film/video format.

Maybe you're too young to know this.
Go find something better to do.

I wasn't arguing that.

You weren't arguing anything, you just tossed out an insult in response to him stating it's been around a while as if you didn't agree with it but had nothing of value to add.
