all steam games are laggy
So I just got a new computer today and I'm new to steam and since my friends are on here, I figured I'd try this out. I was really excited, but every game I try to play is super laggy. I deleted everything I've downloaded since i got the computer like two hours ago, but nothing seems to be working. It's not overheating, all downloads have been cleared, and I'm connected to the internet. Everything else is running smoothly, just not steam. I’ve tried roblox and minecraft and they’re both fine. Is there anything I can do to get it running normally?

The CPU says enough, this is one of the lowest specced laptops you could have bought. It is made to browse the web on a budget, not play video games.

aw dang. i did some research before i bought it and it said it should run steam fine so it’s disappointing that it won’t run it. thank you for helping!! i’ll probably end up returning it so that i can play with my friends but i just don’t have a whole lot of money to spend

It probably does run Steam fine. But games are separate programs with wildly different requirements from Steam and each other. It kinda seems like you're globbing Steam and all games together into a single bucket.

And it can probably run some very low end/low demand games fine. But aside from the CPU being extremely low spec, you probably don't have a decent GPU either which would further limit gaming ability.

Out of curiosity how much did you pay for the machine? While price doesn't necessarily gauge performance a $300 machine probably has a lot less power than a $1300 machine, even in circumstances where the $1300 machine is terribly overpriced.

oops sorry i was going off a reddit post that i saw where it said it should run most steam games fine. didn’t mean to generalize like that.

i paid $350. i know it would be better to spend the money on a more expensive one if i want it to perform better, but i thought it would run what i wanted fine. im going to return this and get a lenovo yoga 9, which is what my friends have and they say works for them so hopefully it’ll be ok.

What CPU does the Yoga 9 have? If it has the same CPU it will make no difference. The same series of laptops can all have radically different specs for each model.

the yoga, are extremely thin, i dont think many have a gpu stronger than the nvidia mx
which are a small step ahead of intel uhd

You should look at what the minimum system specs are for the games you want to play. You can then look at something like this GPU hierarchy[www.tomshardware.com] and this CPU hierarchy[www.tomshardware.com] to get a feel for where those CPUs and GPUs fit.

For example, Skyrim Special Edition is a golden oldie. The recommended GPU is a NVIDIA GTX 780 or R9 290. So, you might look up those GPUs on Tom's Hardware to see what they say. In their benchmarks, that puts you around a Nvidia GTX 1660, AMD Radeon 5500, or Intel Arc A380.

So, if you want to play Skyrim with nice settings, you'd want something around that range in your PC. Any GTX 16xx series GPU would probably be fine if you're willing to spend some time reading "how to optimize Skyrim" guides on the internet and potentially lower some graphical settings.

Dave the Diver has even lower system requirements, and it's a much newer game. So, it depends on what kinds of games you want to play and how demanding they are.

Yoga Notebooks from Lenovo are terrible at best.

Their only good ones are Ideapad and Legion series.

If it doesn't have at least a 10th Gen or newer i5 or i7 along with GTX 1060 or better; you can pretty much forget about gaming on it.

Reality is you still need to drop at least 1 grand for a decent gaming laptop. There's no cheap alternative unless you only plan to play games from the 80's and 90's.
