That's basically what Thermalright has done, they minimised how much it costs to produce their coolers without actually affecting the overall quality, by doing it themselves instead of outsourcing.
they are aiming at the top 1-2% who want every bit of cooling they can get
those who want the cooler that can get 1-2c better when they pick the correct version and install it properly for their cpu
for those cost isnt as much of a factor
The price is no issue at all..
I mean when you dabble with 300 euro cases, with 400 euro in lights added...
as well as an AIO cooler of 300 + 200 euro worth of fans... only to tear that out to replace that for a 1400 euro costing custom loop.. that breaks all the time and has by now forced you to sunk over 4000 euro of repears in it (as pumps lifespan is just not as good)
than a simple 150 euro aircooler.. does not even lift an eyebrow..
but why does it look so awfull always...
I prefer spending 300 euro on a cooler that looks a heck of a lot better and has nearly identical cooling performance.. over.. this...
sure I am not the "it must all be lgb yo!" while ignoring function.
but if I can get 95% of noctua's performance but with it actually looking nice.. thats an acceptable tradeoff to me..
they should release a noctua premium range.. same quality parts.. but with more chooice in colours..
Well if I had $150 to spend on a brand spanking new cooler, Noctua would be my last choice in the category considering on whats out there that looks better and fits my build better. I mean theirs a point, if the cooler was $60 - 70 bucks, sure I could deal with it, but more than that looks for me start to matter, and $300 bucks it will matter even more.
I'm curious what the black version will be priced at, most likely $170.
my thinking exactly... when you spend that kind of money you want your cake and eat it too.. aka it needs to have excelent performance AND look great.
I can do with the 2d best performer if it looks better....
that said not all splurging is wise.. the custom loop.. ended up being a headache chapter.. as pumps keep breaking.. by than the model you had is no longer available and before your know it your original build has all parts in it that not match it's looks despite having spending a fortune on it.
a good aircooler.. or even passive cooler.. is a much smarter move.. if you like that your computer still looks the same 10 years from now... and not want to do an rma every year..
If they made a version of this that was just made all white.. or even black metal with all white fans... than it wouls be a serious purchase consideration...
for prices like this they should release the metalpart in :
silver, golden(copper) and black
bonuspoints if they release them for a surplus charge in metalic paint in blue, red and green.
and the fans in any combination (ouside and inside) of
white, black, green, blue and red you want.
so either a solid colour fan or a mix of 2 of these.
unique colours.. like orange and pink.. those are not really viable to have in your lineup.. but I think any highend part should give you the option to pick the stock colour of pcb and other metal and plastic parts..
most of the r&d went into the fans of this thing.. that are made just right.. will thus not hinder the performance having the metal part being other colours or have the plastic not be the awfull brown and white..
can't properly cool an 78003dX let alone an 79503DX with that...
it will trottle like mad if you do...
so that cooler needs an upgrade too..
Not going to happen. You would need a cooler that takes up half the space in the entire case to cool a high end cpu passively… i think i saw a video some time ago about a computer where half of the case was a passive cooler… That is pretty much the only way.
would not be an issue... there were in the past mini ITX cases that were basicly solid metal ridged with internal copper piping..
look up the streacom DB4
it could cool
passively cool a cpu with an TDP upto 85W.. and you could buy aditional extra's use a third side to lift that to 130W.

it stock could passiively cool all cpu's upto a 65W TDP
but with the LH6 kit, it could increase that to 100W TDP (and 105W usually worked fine too)
(that was enough for the cpu's of it's era.. but an 78003xD needs 120W tdp, should be doable given how small it was...
an gpu cooling kit also excisted.. to use a third panel for cooling.. but it only provided 65W of cooling... but generally could work with 75-100W cards with a bit of tuning.
this allowed it to work really well with the 1650ti (kalmX was made for this) in stock configuration.. or an 1660 that was downvolted to 100v
keep in mind this was when these cards were NEW.. and the 2080ti was basicly the best you could have... so while absolutely budgetgaming performance... you could back in the day totally game on it.
a third kit excisted that would even allow you to mount an optical drive in it...
the rest of the issues with the DB4 came from it's small size..
it did not fit an atx.. but you could buy an streacom passive cooled psu.. and cut of the top (as the actual parts only take up a third of the height.. so you could effectively BEND it to fit..
OR
make the powersupply external and have a powercord... either solution.. would not add any noise...
100% passive system possible..
now take that but give it a bit more UMPF
**first lets make it a proper bigtower... that gives vastly more cooling area and performance... i
-it also easely allows in normal sided psu.. so that issue is soilved.
***next lets alter the size.. there are irregulair shapes for a pc case thinkable.. that have much more surface area to cool with.
**finally adress the issue the DB4 never fixed... it never used 1 side to cool all its cables and the aio was at the bottom,.. the top was not used exept for optical drive ..
if they JUST release a kit to use that 4th side.. that gives the GPU also 100W to play with... like the cpu.
**so make kits that give you control.. make it so that 1 side goes to cpu, 1 to gpu.,. and that you can with kits deciede yoruself if you add the other sides all to cpu, all to gpu of both.
I still not see a modernly made full tower sized version of the DB4 cool an 450W 4090... but having a case cool passively 120W per side (and added siddes give +60W
would mean if 3 sides are given to the gpu and 1 is used to cpu.. it can passively cool upto 240W gpu and a 120W cpu... while also powered by a passive psu..
that would make a fully passively cooled system with an 7800x3D and an 4070 or 4070s totally possible or with a bit of tweaking an 4070ti.
that be a case that would be nice to have
If you want to proudly display your new Noctua fans, a Fractal Design North black case looks quite handsome along with said Noctua products.
so MAKE the case the cooler.
if a tiny case like the DB4 can cool fully passively an 100-110W cpu and a 75-100W cpu while one side is not utilised for cooling.
than a bigger one, that DOES utilise all 4 dies most definitly can propely cool a modern cpu.. + a midrange gpu.
I bet with a bit of tweaking you could already the 7800x3d or 7950x3d running inside the db4..
120W tdp is not that far off it's upper limit.. so a bit of underclock/volt should suffice.
but any modern gpu would be off the table.
not many made these day you can get to run at 100W.
PERHAPS an undervolted and clocked 4060..
if the other route..
that NH-P1 is large.. and would cover most my motherboard.. but it could easely fit my case.. and would be MUCH less of a hassle to remove than my current watercooling is.. that needs draining.. (always risky.. as it does not drain well with gravity.. I basicly have to make it be pumped dry) which will heat my cpu up insanely fast.. to the point of killing itself.. so it's a risky maneuver...
than.. I have to rempove 8 fittings.. as even when drained.. pipes can leak.. and get in the way... and plug the holes.... in the radiators... with plugs..
remove the gpu.. to not have it leak.. and finally remove the pump..
all that just to instal an m.2 or plug in some more ram...
and than all that in reverse....
vs that.. just having 1 massive block of metal to remove.. would be MUCH less a hassle..
