Desktop shortcuts not working

For the past few months, all of the desktop shortcuts created by Steam are showing a globe icon and give an error when clicked. The only solution I have been able to find (changing the default app for .url files to Internet Browser) doesn't work.

Edit: Shortcuts made prior to this glitch (about three months ago) work properly through Steam and, when hovered over, show the steam://rungameid link. For shortcuts after the glitch started, I have been going into the files and making a shortcut directly to the game executable.

The shortcuts should be going to your default browser linking them to the Steam server.

I think I saw a solution to broken icons, but it was a while ago.

I don't use shortcuts so I am of no help, BUT I know it is a very simple solution.

The good, kind folks that lurk this forum know the solution and they will be here to help in a bit.

they use the steam:// url protocol, not for any browser

exit steam, make sure steam is running as administrator, and run steam again, it will fix itself

grab filetypes manager

delete steam url protocol
along with steamlink url protocol

exit steam, reboot and run it as administator

Nevermind, found them. How do I delete them?

It did not recreate any shortcuts, but the protocols are back.

Try deleting the shortcuts on the Desktop linked to Steam and re-create them after launching Steam via Run As Admin

Honestly I would never suggest using that option but instead just load up Steam and have it defsult.to launching into Library then launch your game and the X out the Steam window

If it's in that list which it only shows like maybe 5 or 6 of your most recently launched games there but yes that too.

I really do not understand anyone's need to have shortcuts plastered all over the Desktop
