Possible your jack is also simply not making good contact, you can try to bend it back with a safety pin or something to get a better connection,but that is quite difficult - a simple solution might just be to get a usb sound card in this case.
I have a 3.5mm cable with a dodgy lead and it only works when the cable is wrapped around something at a certain part of the cable. When wrapped, I get all the audio, yet, when loose, it will be distorted and I lose the left channel.
Given your symptoms, this would be the first thing I would change. It costs less that a pair of open backs. If that does nothing, then look at your mobo.
