Yesterday's Nvidia update is weird
Yesterday's 555.85 driver update did weird things to my PC. When it finished installing, my screen turned grey and grainy. I was scared out of my mind...this never happened before. A few seconds later it fixed itself.

I played 2 games today, and in both games my GPU usage was stuck. One game used a stable 17%, the other (Witcher 3) a stable 31%. It was stuck and would not change.

I restarted my PC and now all seems OK. So what happened here? GPU is RTX3060, few months old.

joys of being a beta tester

complain in nvidia forums

Things like this is why some of us don't update software the moment it's released. Exception is if there is a security fix but other than that holding of updating is bad thing.

wait for full public release, or just dont update driver if the gpu is from last gen or earlier

newer drivers only have improvement only for current gen gpus not older gens

in gfe settings, disable auto driver update

555.85 comes with new . . . :

# GPU drivers
# HD-Audio drivers
# Physx drivers
# USBC drivers

. . .

A clean and fresh install is recommended . . .

And please dont use this :DSTpoop: Nvidia Experience BS . . .

After seeing this post I used the so called poop Nvidia Experience to get the update - the install went ok but did not seem to finish properly (I seen this 2-3 time in the 2-3 years I've been using it) but ran it again and all went ok - same as usual. I played a bit of Snowrunner (my 3070 runs at 75% at 60FPS, mostly ultra) and all looked as good as before.

I reckon maybe the OP got some corruption in the download and/or install - It's all fine here.

Recommended by who? The same people that tell you to use DDU every time you update your drivers? Don't you think that if a clean install was needed that Nvidia would integrate that into their installer? I've also used Nvidia Experience basically since it's been a thing and never once had a problem with it updating drivers. I apologize if this comes across like a personal attack its just this stuff pops up in every single gpu/driver thread and has zero basis in reality.

Thanks for the replies, but now I'm more confused. What's a legit, safe way to keep my GPU healthy and updated? If not GeForce Experience.

Whatever you've been doing. The mistake you're making is that you seem to think there is a problem worth looking into off of one update gone weird?.

This kind of thing happens all the time, move on. When it's a real issue, it will still be am ongoing problem.

If you're asking if there is a way to make it so you are guaranteed a flawless experience in pc, no there is no way. Stuff like that will happen.

I guess you can try not updating so often. You probably won't me missing out on much.

do nothing, seriously
with last gen gpu you dont need the newest driver
disable gfe driver updates
id go back to old driver for a month and wait for them to fix

Okay thank you, you all helped. Made me feel better. Thanks.
I stopped all Nvidia (and Windows Shell) updates after the fiasco I went through and stopped at Nvidia update 551.86 - runs like a charm now tho.

Be careful, OP...

LIke I said above, that update worked fine for me - the update is not the problem.

Do NOT install the 555.85 driver update. It's bugged. Roll back to the driver before it. It's caused problems with some games.

as with any updates to software, wait and see if any issues/bugs are complained about, if nothing arises issue/bug wise, then get the update.

as for where, GFE is perfectly fine to use, ignore people telling you not to use it.... if not you can get them manually.

also, as for the mentioned, "clean installs" , using DDU is also perfectly fine and a well know program to use and it works great, not to mention, nvidia has an option to do this as well, in GFE, though its not as good as DDU.

also, no reason to stop getting driver updates or disabling them.
