CPU fan fluctuation (usage spikes) when gaming. help?
last 2 days i have this problem when playing some more cpu heavy games like arma3 and far cry 3 etc, after a minute or so, my cpu fan speed fluctuate heavy, very noticable by ear, in short intervals, like every few seconds. sound varies from very silent to the max. this is with cpu q-fan option enabled in bios. when i disable it, fan runs at 100% and there are no fluctuations but it is too loud then all the time, when not playing games etc.... there are no performance drops, just that changing sound of cpu fan. i have this problem only when gaming, otherwise it runs perfectly silent at same speed. is there anything i can do about this as it is pretty annoying while gaming?

thanx for any help.

That's pretty normal. If you want to reduce sound, I suggest getting a quieter CPU fan, as I did.

i know loudness is normal, but huge and fast changes in loudness of fan? it's like really noticable by ear. loud sound doesnt bother me really, but fast increasings and decreasings of fan loudness does. i hope this will not cause some problems. as temps are really ok, with high gaming gpu is around 60-65 and cpu also around 58-59. at idle both are around 40 C.

thanx for posting.

asus p8z68-v lx
i tried adjusting, as i said if i disable q-fan option in bios, to run cpu fan 100% all the time, no fluctuations in fan sound, but it is 100% loud then all the time. i would like it to adjust to cpu temp as with q-fan. what else can i adjust in bios? i am runing asus optimal mode (tried with normal, same), q-fan enabled and fan mode "turbo" (tried with standard, no changes either). anything else i can adjust there?

ok man, thanx i'll try again adjusting things in advanced. but you say it's normal to have this huge changes in fan sound every few seconds when playing "heavy" games?

p.s. also will changing power options to "high performance" in control panel do any good?

huge thanx, i'll try adjusting things some more there. will report results. cheers dude.

problem seems to be spikes in cpu usage. i dont know if this was before, but i noticed spikes from 0% to like 20%, in a second, then back to 0%, when open things like internet browser. during gameplay, usage goes up to 80% or higher....

The fans on the CPU and GPU have thermostats and the fans go up and down depending on load and heat. Very similar to cars. Good fans are fairly quiet. Ones with problems are not. But overall. All gaming systems cause of all the work being done require heavy cooling so none of them are silent.

yes but that is not a problem. i know that. problem is that cpu usage is spiking for like 30% if i do anything like browsing, opening program. from idle 0-3% to like 15-30% usage. and if i play game it spikes similary but for example from 60% to 80%, etc.... spikes means it only jumps on higher value for a second, then goes down again. depending what i do, but usually if i do anything heavy, its like every few seconds. that was causing fan to speed up and down, what i asked in my original post.

You can buy new fans that are rated to be more silent. The reason your fans are loud is because your cpu is under decent load in which the fans think it needs to spin faster to adequately cool your cpu

but are spikes (around 10% to 20+% usage) in cpu usage normal for such "ordinary" actions like opening browser, programs, hd videos, steam, etc...?

yes
loading a page, flash content, need cpu power
depending on the cpu/core count and browser, it may max 1 core for a short ammount of time

ok guys thanx. seems i fixed it with defaulting all bios settings. then just disabled power saving in bios, and i set power option in control power on high performance. just played far cry 3 for about 1 hour, no loudable spikes, seems just like before. thanx again for all suggestions and explainations.
