Coil whine while charging

heyo,

I do got coil whining on my MSI laptop when the charger is plugged in, even in idle. It get ''worse'' by moving the USB mouse. When I unplug the charger its all done. I already turned off C-state wich lowered it. And in MSI dragon Center I can set shifting to ECO and its gone also. But ill leave that in performance mode.

I know coil whine is normal, but also in this case?

Coil whine is normal.

It's caused by power going through an inductor, causing it to vibrate.
It happens to all of them, how much depends on their quality and how well they're soldered to the board.

There's nothing wrong with it, it just means power is going through them.
So, don't worry about it.

I've got a mains to multi-USB charger, it's got INSANE coil whine, you can hear it from other rooms. My TV has it too.
But I've never had a computer do it to me, so I guess I'm lucky.

Its so weird bcs its only happening when im charging the laptop, as soon as unplug it its gone. So thats a normal thing?

it is. if you want to get rid of coil whining, maybe try another charger that is compatible to your laptop but from another brand...if it is available on ebay etc

Ah okay thanks for the info! Its not that bad, its only noticable when the fans are almost off. And I use a headset anyways. But was trying to make sure its not a faulty thing :)

Yeah, normal and fine.
Just means there's power going through the charger or circuit to the battery.
And, when you unplug it from the laptop, there's no coil whine, because there's no power going through it.

That would depend on where the coil whine comes from.
If it's from the charger, fine, if it's from inside the laptop, not a chance - only way to stop it then is buy new coils, and bust the soldering iron out, and get busy.

i cheap trick is liquid plastic spray...it can take coil whine away by hardening inside the coil.

The whining comes from inside the laptop while charging. But ECO shifting or unplugging will take it away. It wont bother me bcs I use a headset anyways and its hardly noticable. but is it bad? Like if its normal and not a faulty thing, im fine with it.

Again, don't worry. It's not bad, just annoying.

I wouldn't recommend people spray ♥♥♥♥ inside of a computer, or anything connected to mains power.

I have the coil whine with the dell notebook and its adapter -- several specimens -- when the notebook is fully charged and is in sleep. Pretty loud and pulsating as it blinks a led in a 4s cycle. For years I was unplugging it that is a drag and not so good for the battery.

Eventually I found a workaround: found some packaging foam (probably from a mobo), bent it around the adapter and stuffed the whole thing in the corner behind my desktop case. Since then the noise can not be heard. It is a little warmer but fine.

More actions = more power draw = more whine.

Though, a mouse shouldn't be pulling enough power to produce coil whine.....So it's a mystery to me.
Does it happen if you use other USB ports?

If I remember correctly also on other ports yes. Will try it if I’m home, but I’m sure I tried it before. If I google this more people have it when moving a USB tho.
