Which is better?
Saw a comment in another forum saying it's better to use the HD audio of a gpu over an optical source of a motherboard.
So which is better? The HD audio from my RX 6600 XT or the Realtek ALC1220 7.1 CH HD Audio Codec, Nahimic Audio on my motherboard using a Digital Audio Fiber Optic Cable Toslink for a 5.1 surround sound home theater?

hdmi audio is better
can do true 5.1-7.1-atmos
toslink/spdif can do 5.1 matrixed, not true uncompressed 5.1

They cant do any of that stuff from just gpu audio. It's just generic audio codrc from 2010 or so with 2 channel 16bit 44/48khz audio

Realtek Toslink is also junk.

Better off using the Realtek via 3x 3.5mm audio Jacks if need surround sound. The HDMI is only good option if you have a Receiver with Speakers to plug the HDMI into.

one way
using hdmi for both to the reciever
similar to how you would do it with a single hdmi to receiver and dp to display
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixSPQ_COb2w

newer receivers do not have analog 5.1/7.1 inputs anymore
which would be better than toslink/spdif auido
but hdmi audio is better than 5.1 analog

Says up to 24bit 192000 Hz from the HDMI gpu audio.

I'm using a Yamaha home theater receiver. PC to receiver then from receiver to tv.

yep, use hdmi audio
enable it in gpu control panel
use dp to the display
you can use hdmi from the receiver to the display to help config the receiver, their osd menu is easier to navigate than the display on the receiver

no atmos, so just use 5.1

My card is a RX 6600 XT and it's software has no audio controls. It's all windows.
DP to display? What is dp?
I have HDMI from GPU to receiver to tv.

displayport, but tvs dont have that

be sure to put the tv and receiver in game mode to remove any additional delays to the video/audio and make it actually usable

be sure to get the correct drivers from amd, never windows update
https://www.amd.com/en/support/graphics/amd-radeon-6000-series/amd-radeon-6600-series/amd-radeon-rx-6600-xt

do not enable arc on the tv or receiver, that adds extra steps
arc = a+v pc -> a+v receiver -> a+v tv -> a receiver
using the pc audio input directly
a+v pc -> a+v receiver -> v tv

select the gpu in windows audio control panel, and configure, set it to 5.1
use the receivers menu to pick the hdmi input and audio source, and disable arc
config the sound to 5.1

Had to open the old control panel and set it there.

pick the gpu audio device, and configure
follow the prompts and test
if 5.1 does not work, configure the receiver to 5.1 using its osd menus

Win11 doesn't such an option in the main audio control panel. I had to run mmsys.cpl to do it.

Once I found the old control panel, I was able to set up 5.1 from the gpu.
But now I am back to square one with the crap audio that is in warzone.
