Why does Microsoft Edge still continue being active in the task manager after a session is closed ?
Hello,

this is purely a question out of curiosity. I noticed that Microsoft edge never really "closes" and continues to be active when looked upon in the task manager programs.
I always need to " kill all Edge processes" in order to free up some memory.
Don't get me wrong I have tons of RAM but it's just that seeing so many similar programs beeing still active and eating up ressources even tho they have been "closed" is quite unconvenient.

Change its settings and disable "allow running in background after closed"

It may come up in background still in order to do update though.

keeping the processes running in the background allows it to start faster its the same thing with the superfetch windows has that sets aside memory to load in more frequent programs faster you can technically turn it off if your on a fast ssd and see if it effects snappyness for you

if your low on ram you could use this

Intelligent standby list cleaner (ISLC)
https://www.wagnardsoft.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1256

it is a active background process cleaner don't worry about the processes they will relaunch if needed

would require you to tinker with it though but once set right its a pretty neat little program of the maker of ddu

By default to make Edge open faster, Startup boost and "Continue running background extensions and apps when Microsoft Edge is closed" are enabled by default

Open Edge, go to Settings and disable those two options.

You can also open your Settings app and go to the Privacy section. Near the bottom is Privacy. Then go near the bottom of the list again to Background apps. Microsoft Edge should be there. Turn it OFF.

Apps don't need to be running like that to open. It can make things more "convenient" but it's not a requirement. All of Brave's services on here are disabled but it opens and runs fine.

Chrome and Firefox do as well. And have as long as I can remember. Can easily turn that off if you wish. I really find it hard that this stuff is news to anyone.

If you had a problem on your phone, you'd investigate and educate yourselves. Please do that on any devices and OS' you use. Learn what things are, their function and how their settings all work and how to get to them all. This better helps you identify when something is not right, such as something unknown or possibly malicious running in the background for example.

Chrome and other Chromium based browsers do as well but not Firefox.
For Edge its more noticeable as some Windows UI elements do use Edge's framework like the weather widget on the taskbar for those that use it

But its very easy to turn off and wouldn't cause any trouble for the user. Most of Windows users nowadays use an SSD anyway so the startup time with the setting on and off will be the same.

Sounds silly to me. If I close a program, I'm likely closing it to reclaim the system resources it's using. Otherwise I may as well just leave it open, perhaps minimiazed and not have to reopen it at all, which is likely just as fast if not faster than having part of it preloaded. >_>

Yet another bad habit mobile devices have brainwashed people to accept and let OSs get away with.
https://xkcd.com/1965/

If Edge doesn't behave, delete it. It can be uninstalled, though if Windows complains, wipe the hidden system folder, too.

The approach to RAM nowadays is different as the RAM amounts of today are much larger compared to before. caching became a thing and the idea is to reduce access times for common tasks and enhance speed that way.

When you would need that extra RAM in case you are running out of memory. the OS would re-allocate that memory back to you to avoid a system halt.

I'd say it's all about RAM usage. No one's such junk running in the background, period. Like has been said that option being on by default is for slower PCs.

All these ON by defaults need to just stop. If something is optional, then leave it off and make the user aware of it and that it "might" help to turn such a setting on.

Why should power users have to spend all day tweaking WinOS.

Seriously if you don't have 16GB of RAM or more and at least one SSD you have no business even being on Win10/11 and should probably go learn and use an older Linux, maybe

Because it is a cancerous piece of junk that Microsoft wants to shove down your throat. And there is nothing you can do about it.

I'm just saying, WinOS has been this way for far too long. It's not about Win10, 11 or Edge.

MS is now run by a bunch of complete morons.

Just get rid of Edge, period. Very easy to do.

And please do yourself a favor, stop using WinOS Home Edition, use Professional as the minimum edition on all of your WinOS devices. Then learn how to use Group Policy to better control OS settings.

Yes, it used to be like that but as others have said, you can uninstall it now. It's better to uninstall it with a third party app (I use HiBit Uninstaler) as it collects more remnants. You *should* be able to uninstall it via Apps and Features but it's def. not clean.

Firefox has its Mozilla Maintenance service but I uninstall that as well. Does not affect Firefox's ability to update or anything else for that matter. A lot of this is bloat, right?

Interesting, I always got this disabled and Edge is still "pumping" in the task manager. You know, I have 10 opened " Edge exe " files active.....while it's actually "closed".
This is really silly indeed.

Yeah you know, everytime I get a new pc or I install for someone a new pc I do some "bloatware" cleaning before starting to use it.
I allready had all the apps turned off but Edge is not in the list.
