Display Card & Bios Woes (1070 in a AM3+ mobo wont display)
I know the 1070 works as its from a friend and has been used it before. The CPU (FX-8350) works, machine posts, fans spin. Everything spins. Brand new top of the line monitor is in working order.

So I put the machine together, it posts, peripherals light up, power button works, fan control button works (old case eh), reset button works. However for the life of me I can not get display. Despite the fact the GTX1070FE has its LED light up and the fan spins. No weird smells.

Anyways I tried every fitting PCIE slot and all 3 display ports and the HDMI port. (Not the DVI as I have no cable)

Windows is not installed, I just have an empty SSD hooked up.

So second time I power it up I noticed peripherals don't light up, and the reset button doesn't work. I am very confused.

So I think the issue has something to do with UEFI vs legacy bios.

However the MOBO lacks a display port.

Would resseting the CMOS works?

This board is from 2011.

unplug everything else, just the power cables, hdmi, and the power switch

you do have a dimm plugged in right?
and a cpu cooler?

DIMM? As in Ram? yes I have 4 sticks of it.

And yes I have a CPU cooling fan on the heatskink.

So you want me to short the CMOS with the little 2 prong thing or take the battery out and put it back in?
you do not need to remove the battery to reset cmos using the jumper, just short it for a few secons

Ah thanks. Tried everything but forgot about delete. Not in the usual spot with the F keys as I am used to laptop keyboards.

keep hitting del on post

Ok so now I can get to CMOS manager but the bios keeps automatically going to try and load an operating system and I have no idea how to make it stick around.
lsdninja 28 FEB 2024 a las 8:08 p. m.
It shouldn't be trying to load an OS if you've timed it right, since that's after the timing window for entering the BIOS. You can wait until you see the POST messages/logo screen, but the more reliable method is usually to start mashing del as soon as you hit the power button.

edit: there might also be a button to launch directly in to Q-Flash to update the BIOS, but I'm blanking on what that is right now. I wanted to say F12, but Google is telling me that it's End

Good. Now make these changes.

Disable Cool and Quiet
Enable Large Memory Remapping
Set SATA ports to AHCI Mode
Set BIOS to Full UEFI Mode

Don't mess with DOCP/XMP yet, leave the DRAM on SPD AUTO for now

I unfortunately can't find this anywhere. It seems I in CSMOS setup Utility but I do see stuff relating to the BIOS itself. I did manage to update via q-flash to my understanding.

Nope. And there is no SSD connected.

Did I by chance not exit q-flash properly?

There is a also a "Keep DMI Data", and "Load CMOS Default" setting I can enable or disable.

I can change those settings or press f10 to power off or escape to reset. I have no idea what reset means in this context.

Oh I think I know why I don't see some extra options. I only installed the last proper bios update not the beta update in 2014. As I am not using an fx8370.

I guess I should do that then.
PlatinumSun 28 FEB 2024 a las 8:39 p. m.
ok so I did that,

Disable Cool and Quiet \/
Enable Large Memory Remapping X
Set SATA ports to AHCI Mode X
Set BIOS to Full UEFI Mode X

I could find the C&Q and disable that. No mention of anything else. Well time to install Nobara.

I think Bad Motha confused the Gigabyte XA's for the I think newer FXA motherboards.

Mentioned in comments of the video. I have a blue board.

However, IF I make a GPT SSD using mylaptop with nobara on it, and throw it in a not UEFI system can it not detect the drive at all? As I obviously can't make GPT partitions.

You're not supposed to disable cool n quiet. You lose efficiency and gain nothing by doing so.
PlatinumSun 28 FEB 2024 a las 9:47 p. m.
Ok so I am in the installation process, and once I get to partitions with Nobara Linux Installer it siezes up.I am installing via ISO flashed as an MBR to a USB. And I have no idea why when I go to add a partition to the SSD it just freezes up like that. Am I supposed to click delete everything on SSD or something? I have no idea if during the boot up proccess with all the green OK's if its even the SSD getting Nobara installed or just partitions added.

EDIT: Ok everything works. GN and thanks for all the help, cheers :)

You have 125 hours in Starfield shut your trap. Bad Motha does this professionally.

other way around
c&q allows it to underclock when near idle
those clock all cores evenly, not like newer cpus that can clock them individually

if a game is not using all cores, c&q can it can make it throttle since its not at full load
Bad 💀 Motha 28 FEB 2024 a las 10:43 p. m.
I wouldn't say turning off Cool & Quiet is a must but it CAN cause gaming related stutters because those old CPUs are NOT well designed as modern-day ones and even under high loads the clocks can constantly bounce around; which again leads to such stuttering in most games.

Anyways all problems are solved but might switch to Sway Garuda (Dragonized Gaming edition has a convenient list of things to install to make it work) or just a regular install of Arch (It will be good to learn how to do that I think), Mint, Pop_OS or Fedora depending if I keep getting shafted by a fork like Garuda or Nobara.

Bugger me I need to manually set the CPU fan (it conveniently has PWM), keeps going up to 2k RPM.

Thanks alot for the help by the way guys!

My 1070 needed this firmware update in order to view my bios via display port:

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/nv-uefi-update-x64/

Maybe it's related to what you're experiencing. Updating the motherboard bios might prove to be beneficial also.
