recommend me a graphics card
(u can skip this 1st paragraph) soooooo i bought this gt720 a while ago and tbh i misjudged how good a gpu i needed haha. i got lucky because it overclocks absurdly high but still, even tho i can play all my games with it and get what the creators intended visually, i sometimes have to sacrifice some antialiasing or resolution

heres what im looking for:
-20 watts power usage the most
-no extra connections except for the main one on the motherboard, the long skinny one
-needs to fit (HP Compaq 8200 Elite Small Form Factor)
-needs to work with neckbeard os (linux) and macrohard winhoes 69 (windows 7)
-needs to have vga, displayport or dvi
-more powerful than gt720

i know the power use one makes it pretty tight, i already know of a variant of the gt1030 which seems to fit these specs (not sure what display connections it has tho), but noone is selling one atm, so id like to know if there are some other types to look for

edit: i decided to just get whatever gt1030 will fit, i did sum research and the 30 watt version will work fine. its not a big increase and its not like its always going to be maxxed out

Not much choice there, given it's a form of BTX style Motherboard.

Only good options now would be:

Low Profile MSI NVIDIA RTX 3050 6GB

Low Profile AsRock Intel ARC A380 6GB

All these require for power is the PCIE Slot power (up to 75W)

As long as GPU offers DisplayPort, you can get it to output VGA or DVI by using an "Active" DP adapter cable.

yea looks like theyre expensive (pretty new, very powerful) and all use much more than 20 watts
im limited not just by how much power the pcie slot can deliver but also by the power supply and i dont want to cost my family any more money in electricity

And why does it need to only be up to 20 Watts for the GPU?
The included Power Supply will support up to the max PCIE slot power for a GPU; which is 75W

There really aren't any other choices.

For AMD there are low profile RX 550 4GB and RX 6400 4GB as well.

that gt720 still has a system requirement of 300 watts

https://www.nvidia.com/en-gb/geforce/graphics-cards/geforce-gt-720/specifications/

amd is usually the best to pick for linux
im going by what the graphics card itself actually uses rather than the recommended power supply or whatever
i stressed everything with heaven and prime95 and its all good, im pretty confident im still inside what the power supply can give. no weird glitches or decreases in power and it didnt shut off

i looked at as many amd gpus as i could and it seems like they pretty much just stopped bothering with such low power gpus before they surpassed the gt720 in efficiency

i dont want to mess with the power supply, it would cost more money and more messing around, and i dont want to drive up the power bills any more. plus less heat

There is no GPU choice below 50-75W

Your best bet really is to junk that PC into the recycle center and move on.

well other than the gt1030 which noones selling rn lol. same tdp, finer technology

uhhhh that would be super reckless and wasteful, id rather not play any more pc games and still have this thing here than shoot myself in the foot like that

just so i get what you are saying

your card never jumps above 20 w, even while gaming?

because even the 4060ti would fit into your parameter except the 150 w while gaming

tru, 20w max
if im understanding the specs right anyway

what about gtx 1630?
Bad 💀 Motha 27 FEB 2024 a las 22:18
You will have problems with that PC, given a few factors.

First off, yes AMD will be a better GPU choice for Linux, however not as power efficient.

The RTX 3050 6GB uses approx. 45W idle and up to 70W max. (all via the PCIE slot power)

The biggest issue will be Win7/8 since you might not have proper driver support for many of these newer GPUs on that.

So either stick with the GT 720 or move up to more modern GPU, but you might have to ditch Win7/8 and use Win10; and also of course, such GPUs will use a little more power. But as long as the GPU is power off of 75W or less directly from the PCIE Slot then the power should all be fine. Your HP included Power Supply was designed to handle that much power, which is not much; it's a dam light bulb worth of power we're talking about here.

75 watts tdp, very expensive
unless theres some variant of it i cant see
r.linder 27 FEB 2024 a las 22:28
You should be able to use a 3050 6GB because it only uses 40~75 watts, not worth getting anything less, especially another GT series

Stable nvidia proprietary drivers on many distros like Arch should have full working support for it now, some were having issues before

I don't know as much as these folks, but I've always been told that you should always get a new power supply when you upgrade your graphics card. Not sure if they are related, or if it's just a good way to remember to replace your power supply every so often.
