It depends what you want to do. You will be very limited by that old spec. Ubuntu Server with pihole for ad blocking. A very basic NAS possibly, with samba shares. If it can take an old card style NIC, them maybe a router, such as pfsense or opnsesne. Oh and if it a 32 bit system, would just forget it.

laptop will be limited by its drive connections
usb is going to be slow, but good enough for one file at a time transfers
but most routers will be as good or better using usb storage

dual core i5/i7 2nd gen i series, will not have m.2 sata/nvme slots, most likely only 1x 2.5in sata hdd/ssd
if you put in a 2-4+tb 2.5in sata ssd, it will speed it up alot, and be good for server storage etc..

Not on laptops/netbooks I recall a 32 bit socketed CPU in one. Now long gone. I may have been able to upgrad it to a 64 bit cpu, but was not worth it. Not sure if it would work. The nc4400 I recall. As for 32 bit OSes, do not expect any useful & maintained server software.

if its an intel i series cpu, it will be 64bit
even the core 2 series were all 64bit cpus

Unless you're running an older build of Windows 11, which is a bad idea when you can just run Windows 10 with the latest security patches.

What would be the point? You would be extremely limited. What's it have for external devices, maybe 1 or 2 usb 3.0 ports.

You can buy a way better Dell Desktop for under $200 and then use that for a server.

Or buy a NAS that can hold 4 or 5.drives. You're going to need to buy drives anyways so you have plenty of space for it to be a server ans house backups and such.

Either that, or use a DynDNS service. Not all servers require a static IP.

And stay away from any Sophos crap. More trouble than it is worth, even when free.

Games. MAME roms, GEN roms, SNES roms, etc, etc. Get an SSD.
