Bump up from gtx 1660 super
What's a bump up from the 1660 super?

I'm going to upgrade mobo/cpu and ram (currently ddr3). In a pinch I wouldn't mind just keeping the card since most gaming I do is more RAM intensive than graphics but I also intend to ditch windows for linux. I figure why not look at graphics options too.

I'm pretty sure the card would still hold it's own upgrading to a ddr4 system but not sure how well the card will play with linux. It also doesn't support ray tracing (at least not properly).

This card was considered a powerhouse for the budget segment when it was current, today what's a step up but not 900+ bucks and also plays nice driver-wise with linux?

Eh, regarding linux, yeah, A.M.D. has been historically better about linux support, but when it comes to the world of upgrades, it's all about "what have ya done for me lately?" A.M.D's. moves recently seem rather conservative. We got the Ryzen 8000 series A.P.Us. for gamers who only have a need for low spec., and new regions got access to last year's Radeon 7900 G.R.E.

Also, Nvidia has been taking steps to improve the experience by finally releasing open source drivers[arstechnica.com] and adding Open G.L. support[www.cnet.com] as of last year. Plus A.M.D. can't persuade the H.D.M.I. forum to let them implement H.D.M.I. 2.1 in their open source drivers[www.tomshardware.com]. Nvidia and intel get around this by adapting displayport to H.D.M.I. using hardware, but A.M.D. doesn't want to for some reason. I can't even say it's cost since Intel's cards are all in the lower price brackets. It probably doesn't matter too much since I doubt anything stops them from releasing proprietary drivers though and people can just use display port instead of H.D.M.I. though.

As for Intel, well, it seems like they're off to a pretty good start, but of course, only time will tell if they can last. I am honestly surprised they didn't abandon the project after the plague based shortages ended. Also, all they have to do is prove is that their next product suffices to possibly last through another upgrade cycle to merit an upgrade to them anyway.

Besides, I'm not saying to discount A.M.D. I'm just suggesting now is bad timing for R.J.S. in particular to make a move. When do you suppose A.M.D's. Radeon 8000 series cards are coming to market? I'm not particularly sure myself, so I can't really make comment upon that. What I can say is that the plays they made this year are relatively conservative ones, so perhaps they are largely looking to unload stock.

i will admit that the imminent launch of Radeon 8000 means they should stop to wait for it. but as far as it goes. if they really need an update. nows an okay time to splurge on a radeon

My guess is the PC must be strong in order to run games through Proton layer . So the taxing would be little as a percentage of the max performance .

The old laptop was with i3 2350M and GT 520MX

Yes, that's what happens when you try to game on a POS notebook on a stable, but not up to date kernel and library wise linux distro with an Nvidia GPU.

You probably also didn't even bother to check which driver the Nvidia GPU was using.

And not necessarily, Proton actually runs faster for older titles, and the permance hit compared to windows on newer titles usually isn't larger then 5% tops.

if you want to get another gpu, i would say, keep an eye on used market as well, i sold 2080Ti for 200eur last year, i doubt that you can get a brand new or used 4060Ti for 200. check used gpu market from previous generations.
You can get certified refurbished rtx 3080 for around 400 or less

Nvidia drivers are mature enough to game on Linux, just forget about anything HDR or RTX related or stuff like Reflex. An 3060/Ti or 4060/Ti if you're going Nvidia else look at what AMD offers like 6700/7600/7700/XT depending on the price. What you play and what res, framerate and texture quality is highly variable though, there is no exact answer to your question.

Take a look at https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gpu-hierarchy,4388.html for example altough YMMV.

If you aim to play at anything 1080p then a 4080/7900 is kinda overkill. And if you don't mind taking the risk then used cards are another option where you can move up 1-2 tiers for the same price. Upgrading atm is kinda pointless though unless you're buying things on sale (or 2nd hand), as in 6 months we'll be getting new stuff again which tends to drop the prices even further.

Nvidia open drivers that work fine have yet to be shipped out. that should be out on rolling release distros shortly though. wouldn't recommend Nvidia either way.

You are then asking in the wrong forum, I think Linux works with AMD now, ask in the Linux forums. Picked a Distribution yet ? Even more focused, ask in that forum.

I'm thinking about trying steam's os. 20 years ago I hacked together gui-less systems with parts on table, no case, and slackware on cd sets because I was poor been 20 years but I got this

SteamOS 3 hasn't been released for general availability yet just as an FYI.
