XBOX 360 wireless controller DPAD stopped working after Steam Update a few days ago.
Up until a few days ago.. the controller worked in steam 100%. The controller still works 100%, but not in Steam. The DPAD is not registering.

I changed steam settings 10000 ways, in big picture mode too..I uninstalled the drivers rebooted.. I deleted the contollerCFG info the the config.VDF .. I clicked every Steam - UI - button I could hoping some black magic would kick into gear and fix this nonsense(I'm looking at you Apple).
I changed over to latest Steam Beta. I think that I even tried to sing bootyjuicy backwards while I sacrificed pizza to dogs of the house.

DeeOhhGee of the DOG clan barked kindly for you to fix this so that I am in a better mood as I give more sacrificial cheese treats when I am in a good mood.
Help DeeOhhGee, fix the controller bug. :P Thank You.

Hi _I_ ,

It's an MS Xbox360 wireless.
I bought it with the Wireless connector for PC so there is no cable to connect to it. (maybe I will buy one)
- The MS Updater program doesn't see the controller (I think that's for newer gen only).

I was able to make the controller work again in Sekiro by black magic timing tricks on joypad activation recognition to the game. I had to do a similar thing to Elden Ring with a Logitech controller.
The trick is.. and it's luck to time it right.. you have the game open on the menu screen, click off the game to desktop. turn on the controller and click the game window with yotu mouse at the moment the controller would register in general, and then when the game registers the controllers (1-2 seconds later, you need to push what is not working.. so I moved the Dpad and it started working again.

-> Steam still says the Dpad doesn't work..but everything else says it is 100% perfect.
The controler is barely used, clean, never thrown or hammered.. it's perfect.

pretty much any ms controller can be updated using usb or bt
it will not update with low batteries

the usb dongle is only needed if the pc does not have bt and you want to use wireless

you can easily test it using joy.cpl

If you are going to do a firmware update on a controller, only do that while it's plugged in with USB power. Just to avoid a problem or accident.

You wouldn't go and update the BIOS of a Laptop while running off the laptop battery now would you.

Have the same issue with 360 controller only. Xbox One controller works fine.

Seems to be a new bug since last steam update.

Only way to solve it was to disable Xbox extended feature in controller steam menu. Not sure how does it impacts the features of the controllers aka One ( rumble ? )

What’s the best way to report such a bug?

When/where did you buy it, they sell pretty good fakes.
Afaik play and charge kit does not pass data just power. I don't remember the Xbox360 controller ever having FW update on PC.

Xbox360 and early Xbox One does not have bt.

i missed it, the x360 controllers do not support bt at all
they need the dongle

my bad

first gen xbone are not bt, also need the dongle (with the top shoulder plastic covering the xbox button)
all xbone s/x after that support bt

anyhoo
test it with joy.cpl
steam can remap the controller, for desktop/bpm/chord and each game
check its config for all of those
if you have a game that supports xbox controllers natively, disable steam input for the game
steam -> library -> select game -> gear -> properties -> controller -> steam input = disabled

I'd also like to throw my hat in saying my Xbox 360 wireless has lost d-pad functionality in Steam games. First I thought it was just No Man's Sky, but Rocket League and pretty much anything else I try, it won't function. Seems to work normally in anything not Steam. And it will work if I use a wire, but the wire I have is too short for this to be a viable option.

Extremely frustrating. I've tried everything suggested here and other places and nothing.

Disable Steam Input and all options for Xbox controllers in Steam Settings. Then your 360 controller should be treated as generic and seen properly

Bug affecting the older 360 gen controllers, disable extended xbox support until its fixed. The steam input tester thing doesn't recognise the dpad.
