Intel KS sku
I know the KS skus are binned for higher clocks but I wonder if that binning would also translate to better undervolting. I know its hard to say for sure since every chip is different but just generally speaking. I haven't really found any good info/testing on the subject.

I'm curious because I'm in the purchasing parts phase of an ITX NAS/HomeLab build I posted about a couple of weeks ago. I ended up ordering the MSI MPG Z790I EDGE WIFI and plan to go with the 13900 since 14th gen doesn't perform any better and I would probably have to buy a second cpu just to flash the bios (props to AMD for making bios flashback a standard feature on AM5). I'm somewhat cpu cooler limited at 145mm max height, the Noctua NH-D12L is exactly 145mm also considering the Dark Rock TF2 so a decent undervolt would be nice for some thermal headroom. The case will fit a 280mm AIO but I don't really want to go that route since the pc will be on 24/7 and spending the majority of that time idle.

Unlike AMD stuff, Intel will still boot even if the BIOS does not fully have the update to support the newer CPU. Just that the cpu model will display incorrect without a bios update. That might then also translate into how the OS handles the cpu cores/threads as well.
I believe intel cpu's have undervolt protection built in do they not? so it may not work.

A lot of information I've seen seems to run counter to that. I've never tried it myself as I normally build with AMD cpus or current gen parts at release but its not a huge deal as 14th gen doesn't really bring anything to the table.

They can definitely be undervolted. I'm running a -30mV offset (Asus limited) on my laptop you just have to do the usual acknowledgment that the changes are not supported and make the proper bios changes. I know you can run into problems with Intels utility but I'll be running Unraid so that isn't an option anyway.
Z790 supports all 13th and 14th gen out of the box; no bios updates needed.
Only boards that would need BIOS updates for 14th Gen would be B660/Z690

I've been under-volting CPUs since Intel 4th Gen (while OC'ing them) and each gen I've never had a problem doing it. As long it helps lower the max heat that's all you really need to do. Too low and it will make the entire system unstable, random crashing, etc.

Yea BIOS flashback should have been made standard across ALL 3rd party Motherboards like a decade ago. IDK why this thing exists where you have to buy a certain board in order to have this extremely basic need of a feature. It should be a standard mandatory feature, not an optional one.
