Why are ISP provided routers so terrible?
Ive had my own router/modem, and then ive had comcast's and version's at different points in time. The entire time ive had my own equipment, ive gotten absolutely no issues.

But with any router an ISP gives me, it runs into problems out of nowhere, like random DNS errors, or ethernet ports disabling themselves.

whats the deal?

dunno mine works fine
Cheap junk, that's why
put the modem+router combo they give you into bridge mode and use your own router
but then you still need to deal with the daily outage when the modem decides to its update/reboot
That equipment has to be purchased by the ISP, and every single customer has to have them. It's all about the money.
They are cheap. So they are mostly not very good.
They are also aimed at the average computer user, who knows little about networks and doesn't want any advanced features.

Depends on where you live

Modems with integrated router functionality in most parts of Europe and East Asia are generally decent.
They do 3-4 jobs (modem, switch, wap and firewall) and apparently have the processing power of a brick phone... or so I heard!

Mine worked fine, no complaints, but then I bought a SoC signage media player with a 1.1ghz Celeron cpu, put pfsense on it and the internet is sooo much more responsive... plus all the benefits of pfsense. £30 well spent!

edit: 2.2ghz, but it never seems to go over the base 1.1ghz.

verizon routers are better then comcast routers

when we had comcast i could never host online games with verizon i can
low end cpu, poor amount of ram, poor quality wireless, garbage software.
But it's cheap
The one provided by my ISP, with default settings works better than some of the highest end ones - even the wifi is faster and more reliable, though I only use that for mobile devices

better question is why are you leasing their overpriced equipment.
Here in CT, they legally have to allow you to buy your own. Something that was $3-4/mo. is now $15/mo. it's a no brainier to buy my own equipment. pays for itself in about a year.
A lot of people don’t know where to look and what to look for, they just use what the ISP provides
Never use the ISP's equipment. It's not free (you get charged to use it every month) and it's of crap quality compared to one you buy yourself. And if you fail to return it when moving or closing service...well.
most are modem + router combos
on those you can disable the routing by setting them to bridge mode
