Upgrade to RX 6600 from GTX 1060
Hi I’m hoping to get some advice from the awesome community about upgrading my graphics card. My 7 or 8 year old GTX 1060 has been doing an excellent job for me for a long time, but I’m playing palworld at 20 fps right now and I’m thinking it might be time. From what I’ve read the RX 6600 is a great budget card. I just don’t know if the rest of my old girl would be able to keep up with it.
It’s an HP pavilion gaming desktop,

i7-8700 CPU @ 3.20 GHz
16 GB RAM (15.9 GB usable)
2x SSD

I’m certainly an amateur when it comes to PC building, so I’m not even sure if there are other specs I should be considering.
Any help and advice from you awesome people would be so greatly appreciated!

Not sure about this. RX 6000 series wants fairly modern motherboard and pre-built HP Pavilions are generally iffy with non-standard motherboards custom made for their PCs.
RTX 3060 12 GB would probably be safer bet if your PSU can take it and it physically fits the case.

very strange you are only getting 20fps in palworld

but for the most part yes, you're system would keep up with a rx 6600
my i5 8600k @ 4.6ghz keeps up with a RTX 4060 in pretty much every title.

there will be exceptions, but your cpu is basically just mine with hyper threading.

I did that same upgrade a year and a half or so ago, only my system has a Ryzen 5 5600 in it (on a B450 mobo, more on that later) and looking back, I definitely got a decent increase. It's only an x8 card, so a PCIe 4 system would be ideal, but I'm not sure I'm losing enough for it to really bother me (B450 doesn't support PCIe 4), especially at 1080p in the games I play. The 8700 will likely hold it back more, but the flip side of that is you can upgrade that part of your system later and unlock the extra performance.

Thank you! Ya I was really surprised, and am worried there’s something else going on that would cause such a low fps rate. I have it set at low and windowed. I checked the performance specs while playing BG3 to compare and saw that I’m only running around 30 fps on there with mid level graphics settings. Could it maybe have something to do with the fact that I’m using a tv instead of a monitor?
Can you think of anything else that could be causing the poor performance? I updated the GTX driver when I noticed the lag but that didn’t make a difference either.
Thanks so much!

Oh also my 1060 is a 3 GB. Not sure if that would make a big difference or not.

Thank you! Can you explain what PCle 4 is for me?

Thank you! Do you know how I could find out if it will fit/accept a new card and/or How can I tell if the motherboard is standard or not?
Also I was looking at the GTX 3050 8GB, which was in the same price range as the RX 6600. Do you think that would be a worthwhile upgrade?

my comment: if you cannot spend more on a grafix board, the rx 6600 is a deal for 1080p gaming. i have such gfx board. and i can play about everythig in min middle details. but if you have the money, buy a faster card. i would go for nvidia 4070 minimum. then one would have max details in 1080p for some days to go. if you know what i mean?

press Win+R and type "msinfo32"
then paste whats in "baseboard info"

that will tell you what motherboard you have

also the RTX 3050 is basically a gtx 1080
the rx 6600 is about on par with a gtx 1080 ti but with only 8gb of vram instead of 11gb

I'd get the rx6600 all day if they are similar in price
that said, one other gpu you should look at is the rx 7600, should be nearly the same price
as the rx6600 and is 15% or so faster

honestly it could be a vram issue, as the game even on lowest hits around 6gb usage at 1080p
the gtx 1060 6gb is only about 10% faster then the 3gb version of not vram limited.

I only bought the RX 6600 because it hit the magic combination of being AUD$400 or below, fit the case I was using at the time and I didn't have to pay shipping. I'll give up on gaming before I spend more than AUD$400 on a graphics card, lol.

I managed to find the model number and the spec page on HP website. Looks like it’s a “Berks” motherboard. How will I know if it is compatible? Here’s the link to the spec page

i would have looked at the rx 7600 but maybe that card is alot more expensive in AUD
then in CAD, ether way you'll be happy with your RX 6600. as it's like 2-3x faster then a gtx 1060 3gb, just as i was going from a gtx 1070 to a 4060.

also if the gtx 1060 fits i'm almost certain a RX 6600 will also fit, aslong as you didn't buy a 3 fan version of the card. lastly the motherboard will almost certainly support it.
PCIE 4.0 graphics cards are backward compatible with PCIE 3.0
you may loose 5% performance of what the card is capable of, wouldn't worry about it.

Would replacing the card with a newer one with more GB fix any VRAM issues?
Thanks again!

it's not a standard motherboard, but that doesn't mean much other then it's not useful
in any other case. i assume that doesn't really matter to you. You'd need a new mobo
to upgrade the CPU later down the line anyways. (well to anything worth upgrading to)
