RTX 2070 upgrade for 1440p gaming
will probably upgrade from a rtx 2070 and ryzen 5 3600x to a rtx 4070 (ti or non ti) super and ryzen 7 5800x3d. this probably will happen in june or so.

is this worth doing and how much extra performance should i get at 1440p?

You can watch RTX 2070 vs 4070 videos on YouTube, it`s pretty significant boost.

Even a 3080 is a pretty good step up from a 2070 for 1440p performance. 4070 Super or 4070 Ti Super would be much better / higher boost

4070 SUPER if you can afford it, basically 3090 level performance, you can go higher with the Ti or Ti SUPER but depending on the price in your area it might not be worth it

if you have selected your GPU as others mentioned, play on a 27" screen.
these are native 1440p, while 24" are for native 1080p resolution.

I literally was in almost the exact same boat,. except I think I had a 2070 super, paired with a ryzen 3900X, which is not even AM5 if I am not mistaklen

I had to upgrade from AM4 to AM5 to be able to handle all games.

Edit: I now play also at 1440p. Definitely a better cpu and gpu were the anwer for seamlesss 1440p gaming

It will be a nice upgrade but make sure to get a decent price on the GPU as you may be just few months away from 5070 at that point.

Some rumours say that 5000 series will come on time later this year while other rumours suggest it will be delayed to January 2025.
Just keep that in mind when making a decision what is a good price when you potentially get a bigger discount or more performance few months later.

no. the next gen nvidia cards will be announced this year and the ada lovelace offerings atm are all terrible imo.
the only card worth purchasing is the 4070 super which has only 12gb of vram, which is not guaranteed to last once "next gen" picks up from slump of the pandemic.

add to it the fact that a lot of aib partners shrunk the coolers and you got a worse performing card compared to the regular 4070. so far only the asus tuf gigabyte aoros models were decent in regards to cooling. the rest is bottom of the barrel garbage that I wouldn't touch.

I think the same applies to 4070ti super too

I think it was only one rumor that suggested next gen nvidia cards will arrive in 2025 and that rumor has been propagated ever since by every outlet.

I would expect them to be delayed if AMD doesn't release anything newer/better anytime soon.

I'd still recommend to wait since nvidia is going to feature gate their hardware like apple.

if the next gen nvidia cards are going to add better value in each segment, that's a different question.
I personally doubt it and think it's going to be another debacle like ada lovelace but I would love to eat my words and see them release great value in each segment.

if not then I'd probably opt for a 5090

3080 might not be enough for newest titles due to 10gb of vram, there is games that consume more than 10gb already at 1440p

Which ones? Only one I've seen is Cyberpunk 2077 at max settings and native (no DLSS), I have a 10G 3080 (there's also the 12G version) and haven't had issues running out of VRAM outside of CP2077, even when I played at 4K for a bit.

Yea maybe Cyberpunk with all bells and whistles cranked to the max at 4K with Ray & Path Tracing enabled. Otherwise no. I have everything cranked up for CP2077 @ 1440p 21:9 and it's using 8.5GB VRAM

And that crappy port; The Last of Us.

Also I wasn't suggesting go out and buy a 3080 of any kind, for their pricing you might as well get 4070 Super or 4070 Ti Super. With these GPUs though, going with 5800X3D is pretty much a must because even a 3800X won't be enough CPU juice to handle such GPUs. Going with 5800X3D might require better CPU Cooler as well.

But yea don't forget there are 3080 non-Ti w/ 12GB VRAM as well.

Either way, it's just a matter of not maxing out settings that don't really need to be, even 8GB can be more than fine if you're balancing settings, there's more to games than graphics anyway

Yea for 1080p 16:9 I had no problems running games like CP2077 on GTX 1080 8GB with good FPS; however I didn't have anything on Ultra and its obviously not able to do any Ray/Path tracing stuff; but still. Still looks good and performed well.
