PC Blu Ray drives
Was wondering: are internal PC Blu Rays better looking (in 1080p) than PC DVDs?

Thinking about getting a Blu Ray player, but only if the quality is better than DVD at 1080p.

None of the entries at Amazon for either internal or external PC Blu Ray drives mention literally ANYTHING about playback of Blu Ray discs. None of the comments and reviews mention anything about disc playback either. Which is why I ask here. It seems that 99.9 percent of the people using Blu Ray drives on their PC are using it to rip their movies -- not play them from disc.

Any real bluray would look better than any real dvd.

Bluray disc playback is a bit of a pain. It's not as simple as with dvds. I think a lot if peope just figure, it's easier to rip it and play it back after than to actually play it off disc.

Never thought about it before but I believe DVD cannot output to 1080p but blu-ray can so picture quality would be better with BR.

Yes of course; DVD is only 480p

Bluray comes in two flavors; 1080p (FHD) and 2160p (UHD 4K)

It would be best that instead of getting a Internal SATA BDROM or BDRW that you buy one that is USB 3.0; that way it won't get in the way of your internal hardware airflow, which is one reason they stopped putting 5.25 inch drive bays in PC Cases. Also by the drive being USB you'll be able to plug & play use it on pretty much any PC Desktop/Laptop; even ones with Linux or MacOS.

BD (Bluray) Drives also can play CDs and DVDs

If it is a Bluray RW Burner it can also burn (create your own) Bluray, DVD and CD; using blank discs you can purchase for backup purposes; such as CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW. There is also 4.7GB DVD (Single Layer) and 8.5GB (Dual Layer) DVD

Thanks for the detailed explanation, BadMo.

I didn't know DVD was only 480p!

I was just going to replace my existing DVD-RW drive (never used, except once many years ago to watch a movie) with a blu-ray drive, not add one. Not too concerned about heat, as my tower doesn't get pushed to extremes, ever, and has excellent case and CPU fans.

What about software? Does Windows 10 have decent support for playing BD movies, or should I be downloading something like VLC? It's been many years since I've even considered these things, so I don't know what's out there any more.

Thanks again!

BTW Malwarebytes says there's a trojan on that avaide site -- both links.

No worries, I can find info on software myself.

To play a Blu-Ray movie on a computer you'll need not only a drive, but also software like this:

Yes Blu-ray PC drives look better than DVD drives during playback. Also if you go for external get one that is powered off USB-C as the power block ones that plug into outlets can be problematic.

I mean depends on the format, if you are expecting a DVD disc to look better on a Blu-Ray drive it wont, it will still look like DVD quality, you need to actually have a Blu-Ray disc to see the quality difference.

usb may not deliver enough current/wattage for usb odd
bricks are always a much better option

Usual resolution:

DVD is 480i or 576i
Blu-Ray is 1080p
UHD Blu-Ray is 2060p (4K), also supports HDR

my comment:
i have quit blu-ray generally, because it is a mess to make blu-ray movie run anyway with windows in my case.. i always failed to be happy with it. i have 24" monitor and dvd looks good enough with dvd. above 32" blu-ray may look better, but always errors and such. what could you do? i cant say. with dvd movies everything works for me. i have lots of them.
isnt mpc (media player classic) supporting blu-ray? i dunno. mpc is free.

Mpc can also play blurays directly off disc, using makemkv as the "on the fly" decrypter.
