Avira or AVG antivirus?
Hello. I remember long time ago that I had a terrible virus in my PC and only Avira or AVG was able to finally get rid of it when all hopes were lost... I sadly forgot which one it was... So I need your help in deciding which one to use...

Antivirus is bloatware and has no business on anyone's PC.

A lot of times these programs act like virus themselves being intrusive, running in the background, interfering with programs, using more resources all while pretending to protect you by showing you the false bologna that it supposedly protects you from. None of this is real and only used to market the product.

Think about it, would you buy the antivirus if it wasn't actually catching anything? No, of course not. So these programs make it look like it caught a bunch of germs, but this is all for showboating to make you feel protected. The reality is you got protected from something that's imaginary only marketed to you as real.

I suggest staying away from those programs, as they cause more harm than good and they are hard to remove when you finally realize how garbage it is.

The build-in Windows anti-virus is sufficient, it just does its job and leaves you alone.

Most other offerings are invasive trashware.
none of the above
Avira has turned into absolute trash. Shame, because it was a good AV ages ago.

AVG is owned by Avast, so yeah

Oh no. :tf2scream:

Both were bought by Norton Lifelock a couple of years ago.

There are actually comparisons of just the two if you search for it online. These comparatives studies of major AVs--they both generally do well but they do well there, not necessarily at your house. There are some things about them I find unscientific but as a VERY general guide, I guess they're OK. Edit: "They" refers to the comparatives that rank the AVs choosing to participate AND make the info public.

I would demo each (go to their respective websites) and see how it impacts the performance of your computer--although keep in mind Avira may requires payment info before downloading.

AVG and Avira have free versions, it seems. I don't know how well they do in a real world scenario though. I did read where AVG has better ransomware protection.

If you want to buy something, I would go to a reseller like SerialCart.de for better pricing of the genuine product.

I run Windows in a VM so I rarely worry about anything. Considering what I do, it's pretty ironic that I don't trust Microsoft. I am guessing many won't either when they see Windows 12.
There is really no reason to pay for 3rd party antivirus. The built in Windows stuff has gotten pretty good, maybe toss in a DNS with filtering and you should be fine. Most bad actors these days use phishing or other social attacks, the days of downloading a Trojan off Limewire are pretty much a thing of the past.

Avast is pretty good, it just have this issue with aggressive marketing of their own product and try to scare you into buying an upgrade.

But for catching viruses it does a good job. I've seen videos test it out and it wasn't bad at all.

I don't think the majority gives a damn. As long as the OS works and isn't too different people will use it.

Windows Bitdefender and a bit of brain knowledge on what to download and what not to download.

The reason I asked for Antivirus is because some people here claim that new Max Payne 3 update gets detected as a Virus on Avira, while my Microsoft Defender doesn't detect it as a threat...
Yes, there are so MANY combos but the key is not to over-do it either. I once read someone had three whole antivirus products installed and was wondering why his computer wasn't running well.

I dislike antivirus software just in general because it's often times just a big blob of code sitting there on your PC. I use Defender b/c it's already like: THERE and the OS tends to go downhill somehow if it's disabled without another product to take its place.

I do use other security products, two of the 3 are free and one, a standalone behavior blocker, is paid.

Insofar as Defender is concerned, it's OK. It's not the first responder on here. I mean: it could be McAfee for all I care. Although McAfee has quietly gotten some credibility back within the past year. It used to be so bad even the founder (who was such a weird and strange dude before he committed suicide to avoid prosecution for murder) cursed it.

Edit: op--install the free version of AVG and see if it's detected. You don't want any false-positives either. Also, in Defender's UI check if unwanted programs are blocked. Windows Security app/App and browser control/Reputation-based protection. Sometimes this setting blocks items you may want incorrectly if it's enabled. Or vice-versa. If uninstalling AVG or Avira, use its product removal tool.

If you are downloading a game update through Steam and its flagged as a virus it is 100% a false positive.
