RAM Set-up (Dual channel vs Quantity)
Hi, Gamers

I recently bought 2x8gb sticks. I had 8 and 4 before.
I replaced it into the dual channel slots.
My question is: do I throw in the old 8 and 4 sticks into the other two slots or leave the 2x8?

Do I want 28gb of RAM or 16gb Dual Channel? (They are all the same mHz)

Running all four DIMM slots on a motherboard has a higher impact on the CPU's memory controller and the motherboard itself, you'd be more likely to come across stability issues (especially when mixing RAM that didn't come together as a singular kit that has different physical specifications), and in cases where RAM is unstable, it can cause data corruption in the OS.

I would just not mix RAM.

Why ask us to guess instead of you doing measurements on your system with programs that you run and decide how your system is better fit for your purpose?

4 sticks have a lower max speed in motherboards. you can see it in your motherboard docu.

i would use 28gb at 2133mhz instead of 16gb at 3200+ mhz

when you care about max fps in games use 2 sticks at 3200+ mhz

Thank you for the productive response, Linder.

The Desktop came with the 8 and the 4gb sticks and I ended up buying the 2x8s at $50... So I'm not sure if quality is a thing with RAM, considering all four are running at equal MHz and DDR. The 2x8 are no name and the old sticks are mercurial (or whatever).

I did what buddy suggested in regards to "measuring" or whatever he meant and didn't feel a difference. Actually I guess I did since I felt the need to throw in the old 8 and 4 sticks.

Anyway, long story longer I upgraded my GPU and now asking whether to put back the old name brand lesser GB RAM or put the no name 16GB alone dual channel, since using all 4 sticks is not a good idea.

$50 for 16GB? Personally would've paid the extra $10 to get a 2x16 kit, at that point i wouldn't have any problems trying to mismatch all those different ram sticks.

You're right, man. I should just buy a new kit lol..

You guys ever heard of Oyemai?

Return the 16GB kit if the place where you bought it from has a return policy and pay the extra $10 for a 32GB kit and you won't have any headaches in the future.

You can get 2x16GB DDR4-3200 Silicon Power RAM for around $50 (USD) so you should probably return the RAM you got.

Thanks, guys.

Um, since I have you: what's your thoughts on virtual page memory? Customize or leave as is?
r.linder 18 jan. 2024 às 10:48
Letting the system manage the pagefile is fine, changing it usually doesn't do anything.

mismatched dimms in the matching slots, would be flex/hybrid/mixed mode
dual ch speeds for 2x the smaller dimm, and single ch for the remainder

Leave it to system managed unless you know you have reason to change it. This is not an "optimization setting" but some people have seemingly convinced themselves it is.

To change this, you need to manually define both an initial and maximum page file size. The latter is effectively setting the commit limit quota.

For reference, system managed has a dynamic quota (it can adjust it based on momentary needs), and will allow it to grow up to three times the installed memory amount.

Low enough values have an increasing chance (as you push memory use towards RAM capacity) of exhausting your memory resources before you actually use all your physical RAM. Why would you want to introduce the possibility of your PC not being able to use all of your memory?

Same answer as it has been for 60 years! De-facto by now, surely?

if 16gb is enough for you : toss the old ram.

if 16gb is not enough for you anf you still can return what you bought to the shop :
-return it buy 2 16gn sticks instead.

if also and to late for right of return :
-sell it on ebay, buy 2 16 gb sticks instead.

if also to no buyer on ebay
-toss the new 8gb sticks too : buy 2 16gb sticks instead

if also no money for that
-buy another 2 8gb sticks like the 2 you just bought and use those 4 identical sticks

if also no money for that
-suffer trough having just 16gb ram until you saved up enough for a better solution.

=======================

those are your best options.
mixing ram sticks of different sizes makes your system very instable and much more likely to crashes aside from makimg it slower.

adding a third 8gb stick still makes it slower.. and as it likely is of a different mhz, latency brand and series.. also more likely to crash.

even if it is exactly same brand, model, series, speed and latency as your new ram. which it is most likely.not... it will make your system slower.
more slower than just having a bit less ram.
