It wont bottleneck any of the cards so doesnt matter really, get what you can afford.
Recommended for 1080p monitor GTX 970 or R9 390, for 1440p GTX 980 Ti.
Would not go lower then GTX 960 or R9 380.

I've seen people get pretty good framerates with a 970 and 6500 at 1440p max settings. None of the tested games went below 45fps and most of them were over 60fps.

Get the best GPU you can afford. I would aim for at least a GTX 960 or R9 380, but a GTX 970 or R9 390 would be better.

The i5 6500 can handle pretty much anything out there just fine, including high end cards like the GTX 980ti.

No gpu is gonna be bottlenecked by that CPU, or any modern cpu made in the last 5 years. A 2500k doesn't even begin to bottleneck a 980ti.

I agree with rumprlcrutchskin,Get a 960 at least
Or 970,below that you won't be having fun ,it also depends on what games you wish to play.

No to hijack the topic, but I have an i3 6100. Would a 970 see any improvement over a 960?

Not a lot
But mainly some

I run an xfx 280x with a 1440p monitor, you don't need a 980TI for 2K, lol.

Probably, but those 2 cores are probably going to bottleneck you. I'd try and save up for an i5 6500 or something and then see how your 960 does then. Dual cores aren't very good for modern games, the extra cores will really help you

I'd have to agree. All the research I've done tells me a 980Ti is basically a Titan X for people who don't have unlimited money to spend.

It all depends on the game, Arma 3 is more CPU demanding.. so your I3 will crap the bed and the GPU can't really help. Other games that are more GPU intensive.. will bennifit from the extra vram.
..if i were you, and if you're on a budget... save up for a new CPU first, more and more games are taking advantage of 4, 6 and 8 CPU cores.. your I3 is causing you more problems than your 960.

I see your point. I was just curious since running Riva Tuner the 960 gets to 99% and all the i3 cores are around 50% to 60%. I'm probably being vain though since I just built this machine and I was using this card with a Q6600, which was basically connecting a garden hose to a straw.

Now I have a case with a window and I like the 970 reference design.

You could always just upgrade your CPU now (mainly for those more cpu intensive games) and then wait for Pascal to come out and get the 1070 or whatever it may be called, although I doubt we're getting Pascal soon with the lack of news for it, so you could just go ahead and get a 970.

NVIDIA recommends GTX 970 for most newer games for 1920x1080. 960 would be laggy i.e. in Rise of the Tomb Raider.
