What matters is the socket

FM2/3/3+ etc for AMD
1150/1155/1xx, etc so on for Intel.

So the motherboard you can get depends on what CPU you have

Entirely depends on the Motherboard + CPU...

If it's Intel, they have generations:
2nd Gen (Sandy Bridge)
3rd Gen (Ivy Bridge)
4th Gen (Haswell)
5th Gen (Broadwell)
6th Gen (Skylake)

Each generation is different, as the motherboard is designed with the CPU to work more closely together. It allows for more direct access between CPU to memory as well as CPU to graphic processes.

So the CPU socket on the motherboard (for example: LGA1150 - Socket H3) must match the CPU. Hense motherboard + cpu must match according to socket.

Then you have Z97 vs H97 motherboards, for example.

The Z series chipset would allow for overclocking an unlocked CPU which has 'K' on it, where as the H series won't.

The Q series is for business, and has security features builtin on the motherboard, such as Identity Protection.

The B series is "budget" and doesn't have any additional features, except the basics to work.

Alright, then the highest supported CPUs you can go would be the FX series

And in this case, chipset does matter. He'll want a 9-series chipset for FX, preferably 990FX.

I know you knew that. It was for OP's edification. :steammocking:

AMD FX4 or 6, a 970 chipset is fine. But u maxing out those boards then.
FX8 or 9; u must get a quality 990FX board.

Such as one of these:

FX 8 get a decent aftermarket cooler at CPU/MB purchase time/build time.
FX 9 get the non-cooler-bundled box CPU and buy a quality liquid cooler.

And whatever board it is, update it to the latest BIOS for stability purposes.

the power phase design has nothing to do with the chipset it doesnt matter if you go for 970 or 990fx what matters is the power phase/and or vrm power support.... the only difference between 970 and 990fx is 990fx offers a BIT better oc stability, more pci-e lanes for sli/crossfire @ 16 each, more sata 6gb/s... so whether you go with an 8+2 phase 970 or 8+2 phase 990fx has NO DIFFERENCE for fx-8 series in terms of "maxing out the board"

You may want to just sell your current CPU and upgrade to new Intel CPU + Mobo.

AMD CPUs are pretty outdated at this point, an i5-4460 or i5-6500 would be a better option. Or a i5-6600K if you have the budget.
