However I would first suggest that u click StartMenu, go to the sub-folder Dell > click the Dell Backup/Recovery and make your backup via DVD first. This helps if something goes really wrong, u can factory reset again or as needed via these DVDs. If you do this backup you require some sort of DVD writer optical drive (internal or external, doesn't matter) and a few blank DVDs (either 4.7GB or 8.5GB); blank DVDs are cheap in stores like Costco, BJs, SamsClub. I get 50X 8.5GB DVD+R for around $30 @ Costco. Course nowa days I always use external HDDs and USB Flash Drives to rid me of using DVDR discs. But I still keep them for when I have movies I download, I backup to DVD for my Mother, the kids, etc.
Dell and Alienware used to always give you 3x DVDs; WinOS + 2x Discs for Drivers & Software; now they do what other OEMs do and just provide your main drive with a recovery partition; no discs. However, as long as your Dell/Alienware is still under warranty; u can call them and say the system failed and u have no backups; they can ship u these set of discs for free.
If you have Win8/8.1 pre-installed with your system; chances are this system has no Microsoft WinOS COA Sticker on it. The product key is within the system digitally. To be honest what I would suggest for the OP is, take the time to run/install your free Win10 Upgrade; once your Win10 has been activated on this system; redo the system fully with just a clean install of Win10. It will be needed going forward.
There is a USB stick shipped with the Alienware. Never thought there could be windows installer on it, because I've seen a video where someone used it for his personal back up.
Dell support didn't know exactly how to reset the alpha to original factory settings with OS / alpha UI / Windows 8 ..,. But they said the windows installation should be fine with the stick. No code needed because the hardware ID is detected as code for Windows installation. OEM
I try to reinstall the next weeks and will report.
Nevertheless Maybe there is someone who also did no back up at the beginning and tried to do system reset and could tell if it worked.
Microsoft and various OEMs do now provide users with "USB Flash Drive" as a system option over multiple DVD discs. For example if you purchase "Win10" OS from Microsoft u can do this a # of ways, Digital (where u buy, get the product key emailed to you, then u download and make your own DVD or Flash Drive using Win10 Media Creation Tool); Or via them Shipping u the OS as a hard copy to your address; via either a DVD or USB Flash Drive; your choice.
The free Win10 upgrade for qualifying Win7 SP1 or 8.1 users will be ending this, the end of July 2016. So take the time to install Win10 within your current OS; activate it; then u can revert or uninstall Win10 for the time being until u feel the need to use it. Once activated, you will have gained your free Win10 product key + activation; and not have to worry about WHEN u actually install it later down the road.
