Equivalent of 1280x1024 in a higher resolution?
I play my games at 1280x1024, yes it is blury and it doesn't look sharp, I would love to play in 1920x1080 which is the reccomended resolutio nfor my widescreen monitor, but it destorts the image and makes it look longer and narrower despite filling the whole screen. I have tried 1680x1050 but I am so used to the strech side ways, that Ikeep resorting back to 1280x1024, is there a way around this? would a different type of monitor help? It is very annoying as I woant to upgrade my graphics card from my gtx770 but there is not much point until I can figure this out.

I have measured my monitor from corner to corner of the frame, it is 19" could this play a partin this conundrum?

This is indeed very strange. Assuming you haven't done anything else to the monitor settings the console and PC should automatically detect the right resolution of the display. Have you considered returning it to the shop and check for faults?

I may try a new 16:9 monitor to see if it is just the monitor itself that is the problem, I will also add a link to a screenshot that I find on google that looks like what I am seeing at 1080p.

This is an image that represents what I see when I set my monitor to it's native resolution http://www.proximus.be/dam/cdn/sites/support/images/tv_format/tv-format-4-3-stretched.jpg
Does Windows' setting match your 1920x1080@60Hz? Something is definitely doing the stretching here excluding potential hardware faults. Also is there any kinda black borders on your display? And what connection cable are you using now, VGA, DVI or HDMI?

Are there black bars on teh sides at 1080p?

Cause you could have just set the picture too narrow. You need to change settings to widen it till there are no black bars. Settings are changed with keys on the front of the monitor itself.

I think I may just give up with this monitor.

You probably should. The dozen or so flat screen TVs and monitors I've gone through the last decade have no such issues. :P

Guys, I think I may have found the problem, I just plugged the hdmi cable into my pc, I tried setting the resolution to 1920x1080 native (apparently) but something strange happened, something I have never seen before.. the screen automatically had black bars on the top and bottom, so I went to the nvidia control panel and it would not change the picture to fit the screen in any of the 3 "select a scaling mode" options, I had to go into the position menu and had to click "resize the desktop if the display setting did not provide a better fit" and it looks as though it has to stretch the screen horizontally for the 1920x1080 resolution to fit the screen, this tells me that the monitors' so called native resolution is a lie, the funny thing is that this happened after reading a few bad reviews about this exact monitor saying that the native resolution is actually 1600x900. In the little picture on the nvidia control panel where it shows the screens aspect ratio in the form of squares, 1600x900 is the only one that fits it properly, No wonder the screen looks so long and stretched at its so called native resolution.

Time for a new monitor!

I'd suggest 1920x1200 (16:10)
These can still do 1080p if needed.

Or buy 2x 1080p screens and have one be turned to Portrait mode and display as your webpage/secondary screen. Use the other for gaming.
