What kind of RAM memory can i get?
My motherboard: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3533#sp

My current memory is 2x2GB 1333mhz ddr3 kingston hyperx cl9

So im planning to upgrade computer memory to at least 16GB, but i dont know what my motherboard can run. I have been checking out this one but im not a techie, so i dont know if it will work: http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-HyperX-FURY-2x8GB-1600MHz/dp/B00J8E8YES

Can you guys please help me give some instructions, tips, what kind of memory i can buy? Maybe link one?

Thank You!

Nearly all motherboards now a day can run ddr3 that's around base clock. The only limits would be your cpu and os
If you plan to keep the existing ram, whatever you buy will autotmatically run at the same speed. Personally, I would just keep the ram you have and add 2x4GB of the same ram for a total of 12GB. That should last you until the ps5/xbox 2 arrive in a few years :) and allow the minimum ram requirements to go up again.

Old board so probably PII (what cpu have you got?).

Pre FX cpus imc is only 1333mhz so that's as fast as the chip will allow the ram to run but amd PII benefits from tight timings so aim for cl7 or cl8

I'd get these ^ although cl9 but by the time you drop the mem down to 1333mhz the timings will also tighten like cl7 or cl8 and possibly 1T if you only populate 2 dimms.

So far thanks alot guys!

My cpu is: http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K10/AMD-Athlon%20II%20X4%20640%20-%20ADX640WFK42GM%20(ADX640WFGMBOX).html

What is the difference between buying 2x8gigs and 4x4gigs? How can i tell if 1600mhz-s will work ? My friend says i should get hyperx if possible.

667 MHz Memory controller X 2 that is what and IMC is so 1600mhz ram needs the imc to run at 1600mhz aka 800 x 2 which would burn the imc in a short time, you can buy 1600 or 1866 ram but you have to run it in bios at 1333.

4x4GB is tougher on the imc so overclocking it past 1333mhz would again possibly burn or damage the imc that's only designed to handle 1333mhz aka 667 x 2, so if you dooverclock you don't boost the ram above 1333..

Now knowing what your cpu is there's not much point throwing a lot of $$ at it so you're better to just get the 2x4GB set and add it to the 2x2GB set and call it a day.

Biggest problem with the propus core cpu is there's no L3 cache so it makes it a less than stellar gaming cpu.

A few examples of your cpus placement ^.

And what if i just remove the current ones and get these ? http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-HyperX-FURY-2x8GB-1333MHz/dp/B00J8E92Y4 Would these work ?

Buy the G.Skill TridentX 2400 CL10 it costs +/-5$ more than some LOW 1333mhz crap RAMs.
Your board says it will accomodate 1666mhz(oc) ram . not sure if your board provides you with an xmp profile of if you have to do it manually but i'd just pick up 16gb of 1600mhz cl9 memory. if the board wont let you goto 1600 you can drop it to 1333mhz then if you ever switch out the board that uses ddr3 you will have some decent ram sticks to put in it. Check the website for the board as well as the will have recommended ram thats been tested to work and also the websites for the ram will also have recommended boards they work in .

Why do you want to have so much RAM for this ancient CPU? What are you going to use it for?

If you're going to upgrade the pc eventually in the near future get some 1600 ram minimum so at least you can move them over to a new pc.

1600, 1866, 2133 all start at 1333 so faster ram will run at 1333 but opens up your future upgrade path.

Your board can oc to 1666 but the imc (internal memory controller) in the cpu is 1333 so that's what you're limited to now no matter what speed ram you put in.

Kingston vs G.Skill I prefer G.Skill, just my preference, I have G.Skill in 5 different amd towers and it works fine and stable one being a x4 640.

Ps, either way 4GB isn't enough these days, I was watching a rise of tomb raider vid the other day and it was using 9.xGB system ram. It's up to you what or how much ram you get but eventually the x4 640 has to be replace sooner more than later.

In the nearest future DDR3 will become obsolete. Intel already switched to DDR4 in 2 of 3 its main platforms LGA1150 and LGA2011-3. Only lowest-end mobile Braswell CPUs still use DDR3... but low voltage. Thus, 1.5V DDR3-1600 will become useless very soon. AMD also going to drop DDR3 - as you remember, Zen also will use DDR4.

And you can argue the fact that there'll be hoards of ddr3 cpus floating around the used market and also ddr3 cpus won't be pulled off the shelves anytime soon, most cpus at this point are better than the x4 640, hell even an i3 and fx6300 are flying by the x4 640.

I dont believe that board supports 8GB sticks
i'm not even sure that board supports 4GB sticks

Its only showing support for 1GB and 2GB sticks on the memory support list.
The max support it has is for 1666/1600, if you get RAM thats 1866mhz or 2000mhz it'll downclock to 1666mhz as thats the max frequency it allows.

But yeah, 4x2GB sticks may be your only option @ 1600mhz.
