GTX 970 Alienware X51 heat issues
i did the operation in november, and it was fine with average temps 80-85 C. Now, with certain games, especially metro 2033 redux, my temps are exceeding 90 degrees, even after underclocking. My pc was bought in March last year if thats important. Any fixes?

i can run new games like F4 JC3 or dying light without these issues.

transplant it into a m-itx or atx/m-atx case
and get a quality 450+w power supply

im afraid i dont have the resources for that.
There must be some simpler solution.

redo the thermal paste on the cpu

I have no idea how to do that and I only bought it late last year

Try the smoke test see what pressure you have. Some like positive some negitive others passive. Maybe try higher RPM fans in certain places...things like that. Or spend 600.00 on water cooling...:)
80..85 C is high, you should want temps lower.

Smoke test?

Clean out your fans, radiators etc...

Considering that I've owned an x51 r2 for the last year with a 970, let me chime in. First off, run MSI afterburner or precision x and create a custom fan profile. Your gpu fan will have to run at 100% to keep temps in check, but you HAVE to do this to get OK temps. Another thing I did was replace the thermal paste on my gpu with gelid gc extreme, and that shaved off about 8 degrees.

Now let me make this extremely clear: if you're running any gpu that is NOT a reference card, you effed up when u picked out your card. The x51 case is too small and air flow is too poor to have a custom pcb gpu. You're expelling hot air into the case and it has nowhere to go.

A reference card expels all hot air out of the back of the case, which is what you want. I shudder to think what your CPU temps are if your gpu is running at 90c. If your temps are at 90c, I'm betting you've got a custom pcb gpu with dual fans.

With a reference 970 and TIM replaced, I was keeping my gpu temps between 68-75 degrees in Witcher 3, which we all know hammers your gpu. But again, if you're not running a reference gpu with your x51...doesn't look good.

I got tired of all the noise and heat my x51 put out, along with being chained to a 330w psu and just did a traditional pc build and transplanted over what I could to my new case. Best decision I've ever made. Gpu temps stay at or below 60 degrees, and the fan doesn't have to run at 100% to keep temps in check.

- Install MSI Afterburner
- Prior to actually launching a game, manually change the GPU Fan % in MSI-AB to compensate for your heat.
- When done gaming and exit out of games, for normal OS usage go back to MSI-AB and put the fan back to AUTO.
- Done deal.

For the x51, the fan needs to be set on auto with a custom fan curve. At idle with a reference gpu, my temps were around 30-35c WITH a fan curve and fan on auto. I'm betting op isn't running a reference gpu which is why his temps are too high.

You need to use Mini or Reference GPUs in X51

But hmm yea regardless; just Manually change your Fan %; it takes 2 secs, Boom, Done!

I'm using an underclocked reference design evga 970. It probably doesn't help it's summer in Australia though

I will try setting fans to 100%
