BSOD when full screen Steam videos / launch certain games
Hi there!

I've had quite a few game issues before that I've been able to solve myself, but this one alludes me.

I have a fairly new machine, built it back in October with Skylake 6700K, and ran perfectly fine for a while. I then noticed that my page file on my primary SSD was taking up an enormous amount of room, due to the 32GB of RAM.

I began modifying the settings, which is when everything went wrong. Two of my favorite games, Planetary Annihilation: Titans and the Homeworld Remastered Collection, appear to BSOD my machine on startup. I also just found that full screening Steam videos in the store, cause the same error. I can live with the latter issue, but I'd really love to play my games again.

Now I'm not sure if it has actually anything to do with the page file modifications, as I reverted it back to default after I noticed this, but I've been running this hardware for months with no issue, and suddenly I have this issue. I've also ran memory tests, both sticks of RAM appear to be clean.

Oddly enough, every other game I have runs perfectly fine, even newer titles maxed out:

Star Wars Battlefront
Homeworld: Deserts of Karak
Battlefield 4
Grand Theft Auto 5

Below are the details of the Blue Screen:

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.1
Locale ID: 1033

Additional information about the problem:

BCP4: 0000000000000005
OS Version: 6_1_7601

Here is a complete list of hardware:

Intel i7 6700K
EVGA GTX 980
32GB (2x16) Cosair RAM
ASUS Z170 Motherboard

I'd super appreciate any and all help!

is anything overclocked?

post a cpuz validation link
http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html
cpuz -> validate button -> submit button
it will open a browser, copy the url (address) and paste it here

and what power supply?
brand/model

and how are the temps?

check temps while gaming
use hwmonitor, it logs min/max temps
http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html
alt+tab takes long enough for the cpu/gpu to drop 20+c

I get BSOD when making a Steam video fullscreen...so damn weird. I'm using Windows 10 Enterprise N.

Same issue with me. Full screen videos on Steam and when I try to run Unepic. All other games installed are fine.

EDIT: Found this, but I don't think it has anything related, cause he's using ATI video card and the discussion is old like hell.

Since you just bumped the thread I just tried watching a steam video in fullscreen but still get the same results. BSOD. I guess it's my hardware, codecs or something...idk. Pretty lame.

I don't think it's hardware related, since we have different hardware and the exact same result. It's somehow a malfunction on hardware communication, caused by a codec, driver or any software conflicting with some videos.

And yes, I think it's video on full screen the main cause. Some games have intro videos using the same codecs as Steam videos. Haven't discovered it yet, but I will.

Tell me: have you cleaned up your system since the first time you had this problem? Full formating... anything. I use this same system since last year and haven't cleaned it up, but it was working fine since last month, I guess. My BSOD is recent. As yours is older than mine, I discard driver issues.

Tried to find any new software recently installed, with no luck. If everything else fails, I'll format, install Windows 10 from zero and see.

My system:
i7 3770k; 16GB; Nvidia GTX 980Ti; AsRock MoBo.

No, I haven't done a fresh install cause it isn't worth the effort. If I ever do find a solution though I'll post back here.

Found the solution, dude! It was causing my Assassin's Creed Syndicate to crash to desktop when launching it. Duet Display and OSBASE iDisplay driver.

Actually I got lucky looking for a solution to my ACS.exe crash and found it on msinfo32.exe Windows Error Report. When I uninstalled Duet Display application, everything went back to normal. Even my games stopped BSODing.

Hope it is the same solution for ya. Good luck. :happymeat:

It's funny cause I actually have Duet Display installed but it's been happening way before that. Idk maybe I'll try uninstalling and seeing.

Uninstalling Duet fixed it. I could have SWORN...I had this problem well before Duet. Idk...either way it's fixed now. Thanks for the solution.

You're welcome, dude. :B1:

Hey guys! Sorry I hadn't replied, been excruiatling busy. But I have been able to confirm it was not a hardware issue, and was able to fix it by uninstalling a bunch of software, Duet happened to be one of them!

Reinstalled Duet and it appears to work fine now, thank you all for your help!

Glad its working again..

If you want to be sure though, or you encounter blue screens again, Download WhoCrashed
it'll analyze the crash dump files and give you a better idea of whats causing your problems.

Thanks, CJ. I always relied on msinfo32 to read the dump files, but it's not always clear, because sometimes a DLL file is shared by two or more apps.
