The GTX 970 runs cooler and uses less power, but the R9-390 has more VRAM for 4K gaming and ultra textures. It depends on what you need. Some games have major issues on AMD cards, though.
The R9 390 is up to +71.184023% faster and typically +46.53692% faster.

It uses 127 more watts though, so you'll need a beefy PSU.
That's +86% more power than the GTX 970.

I highly doubt that...

According to the benchmarks they are nearly the same.

On-Par performance-wise:
390 = 970
390X = 980
Fury/FuryX = 980 Ti

Now AMD ones do tend to have more VRAM packed onboard, that alone is not added performance.

Try it at 1440p or higher. ;-)
Using pure DirectX 12 codepaths, not hybrid codepaths, under Windows 10 x64.

In 3 years time games will show the R9 390 to have been the better buy.

Who on earth keeps video cards for 3 years? I think I've been though 9 in 3 years.

GTX 970 and R9 390 have similar performance level. R9 390 gives slightly better FPS in most games. But namely slightly. Forget about VRAM difference - that is pure marketing. R9 390 hasn't enough performance to fully untilize 8GB anyway. Don't listen crap about DX12 and future use. Noone knows ATM what will be better in 3 years.
In these 2 videocards I prefer R9 390 for Windows gaming (if you don't need Physx). It costs the same, but a bit faster.
i keep shifting cards around for over 3 years

gaming pc -> fun pc -> htpc

htpc is still using a gts 250
great for light gaming and video

Modern games take at least 3 years to catch up graphically to the latest graphics card. Sure if you want to be on the cutting edge and max out that massively intensive game, but for the vast majority of games they won't be so taxing.

My thoughts exactly. Hell, I'm pretty much done with my 970 at this point and I've had it less than a year. A 980ti is in the cards and budget this month.
I'm not looking at 4k or higher res than 1920x1080 atm and I like GeForceExperience, it's just that a friend scolded me for thinking about the 970 since the r9390 has 4GB more and it's future-proof.

So, you guys are saying I should get the 970? the MSI one looks great.

Yup, get a decent 970.
You could also order from other countries btw., a decent GTX 970 (including Rise of the Tomb Raider) starts at 330€ here.
OP what GPU you have now?

gtx 650 2gb :conwayfacepalm:
Future-proof seems like a stretch, at best. :)

I've got an MSI R9 390 and am very happy with it. It's great for every game I play, and it eats up things like Blender and Tracktion, etc.
