I believe this approach could halve hardware costs. It eliminates the need for a separate motherboard, CPU, RAM sticks, an individual PSU, and allows for much smaller packaging and better software optimization.
Modern consoles are basically PC’s with walled gardens. I hope Valve disrupt the market with a Steam console and bring traditional console gamers into the PC gaming fold.
It's all speculation though. IGN India doesn't have any more of an idea than you or I do.
You don't need a 4090 or a 7900 XTX to play PC games, and a Valve console won't compare to the performance of those excessive, luxurious, and expensive cards. Even looking at modern consoles, a PS5 has the rough performance equivalent of a 2070, which can be had for about $300 USD. Saying you can't afford PC gaming because a 4090 is expensive is like saying you can't afford to drive because a Lamborghini is $400,000.
I will say I sold my PS4 Pro earlier this year, and I'm looking at putting together a HTPC to fill the hole where my PS4 sat. I'm holding off a bit though in case Valve announces something.
I never mentioned a 4090. I said a 4080 or AMD equivalent. Those are 4K cards.
And the SoC in the consoles cannot be so clearly compared to PC parts, especially since console games are highly optimised. A PC gamer has to overspec to get the same performance.
I dare you to try and get Jedi Survivor for example running and looking anywhere as good on a television with a 2070 as the PS5 does.
Not only would a Steam console save us huge amounts of money it would also allow devs to target fixed hardware in the PC space just as they already do with the Steam Deck.
Nothing happened in that regard since then.
Well, besides the SteamLink VR for wireless VR.
Valve Time. I’m aware product launches are delayed all the time, particularly at Valve. And 3 months isn’t a very long time. Besides, it was said to launch end of year. So the supposed delay hasn’t even technically happened yet.🙂
But even so, even if the leaks turn out to be false, the concept is sound.
Steam machines made by Valve instead of greedy third party’s would be epic.
Considering how badly Valve burned themselves with the Steammachines, i'm not sure they will try again. The SteamDeck addresses a niche that consoles don't. Which is the main advantage of the SteamDeck, not having to compete with either Playstation or Xbox consoles.
Exactly. The situation now is completely different than 2014.
Last time you could build a PC relatively cheaply. Now you can’t.
Last time Valve asked third party vendors to build the boxes with off the shelf components which coupled with corporate greed resulted in very expensive underpowered boxes. This time Valve could create a custom SoC with AMD with would be result in a cheaper box.
Furthermore, SteamOS is now a powerhouse. It’s the envy of the entire PC world. It gives the user a console user interface without sacrificing tweakability or the freedom of an open PC ecosystem.
Steam Deck is a fantastic device for handheld PC gaming, but there is a huge segment of PC gamers who have no interest in portable gaming. They like to play on a monitor or a large TV. For that we need a Steam console. Imagine playing the latest AAA PC games at 4K/60fps with FSR3 or 1440\120fps on a box that costs less than a comparable graphics card alone!
I think a LOT of PC gamers would buy a new Steam Console every 3 or 4 years or whatnot instead of buying a new GPU (plus other expensive components) every 3 or 4 years.
Then imagine the incredible synergy Valve can create between a Steam Console, Deck, and VR headset.
Your idea of making a PC but have it a console and be cheaper is not plausible. The reason why consoles are cheaper are because of inferior hardware and the fact that they sell them at a loss.
So, sorry to say, your dream of Gaben riding in on a pearl horse to sweep you off your feet just isn't going to happen. Well, kinda... the Steam Deck is an amazing handheld that holds its own. While not quite a pearl horse, you could say that he came in a Honda Fit or something.
