Steam Deck Proton question
What is the best Proton to be using? Should I used the Proton 8, Proton Experimental, Proton GE 25, or Proton DB?

I downloaded GE 25 but tbh I don't see any difference in my games. I'm not sure what the difference between them all is.

Whatever one works the best with your games. Typically the newest one that works.

Proton-GE is a fork of Proton that may have fixes in it before Valve officially adds them.

ProtonDB might show earlier versions of Proton than 8 because nobody has submitted test results under 8. (Same goes with 9 and same will go with 10 once it comes out this year)

Either the latest stable or experimental.

I only recommend using experimental if you are capable of troubleshooting any issues it may cause. It is rare but experimental may introduce bugs and breakages at random.

Does Experimental track the last Wine stable release or does it merge development releases?

Depends on the exact branch of experimental you are running.

Bleeding edge will build straight from master.

Mainline experimental accumilates change which should end up in the next stable Proton release.

You are unlikely to get useful answers there on technical topics.

Thanks for the info. I’ll keep messing around with them. It sounds like DB isn’t super useful for every day gaming. I’ll try 8 again and see if that helps with some of the games.

If you have older (less performant) hardware you may want to play older games (which are still present in abundance). For older games / older hardware you get often better results using some older proton-versions.

Ah, thank you for posting this question. I had no idea experimental could come with bugs. I dont know if I told it before to update at will but I ran into one of those bugs last night where it would crash any game I tried to play and my steam deck with it. Was wondering what the issue was until I realized proton experimental updated
