Web browser freezes on startup (urgent)
So I was literally idling, web pages open on edge, doing nothing when all a sudden it freezes with that white shade windowed thing Windows does. System just acted weird from then so I restarted.

After restart, opened Edge to restore tabs and it froze again. So another restart, this time no restore and it still froze.

Then I followed some YT video that told me to open settings, apps, edge, modify, reinstall edge. That didnt work. Video had a step with cmd sfc /scannow which I didnt do.

Now Im in safemode running a full drive scan with malwarebytes. Additionally tried to open chrome in safemode but it also froze. But has anyone faced issues like this. Could it be hardware acceleration? Oh also, Ive noticed during these freezes, the cpu can jump all the way to 100 usage on all threads

System is a laptop
i3 8300h
16 ram
Desktop 1070 via nvme m2

First thing I thought was try disabling hardware acceleration. Second thing is if you have an igpu, try alternating between having edge use that instead of dedicated or vice versa. Third, if neither fixes it try Brave or any other browsers in the meantime until you do whatever it is you urgently need done.
check windows update could be stuck
thanks yall seems to be fixed now. Strange behaviour when it happened

what browser?
you cant really uninstall edge or even disable it, its always called for windows help junk even when another browser is set to default

sfc /scannow
is perfectly safe to do, its windows repair tool to scan and fix system files that may have been modded or replaced

They told you that in the first post up there by the OP. Try reading next time before you write a comment.

That's not true at all. I have a Windows 10 computer and completely uninstalled edge. It doesn't exist on my system and it never runs. Just because you don't know how to do something doesn't mean it's not possible.

You can absolutely de-install Edge browser. Every time Micro installs it, I remove it and all its remnants with HIbit Uninstaller.

I do keep the WebView2 runtime which apparently some native apps like Weather need.

Edit: it's a good idea to keep a secondary browser in case major issues come up like this one. Since I run a gecko browser (Firefox), I keep Brave as a secondary.

edge parts are still in the reset of windows desktop and explorer
you can pull parts of it out, but not all of it

OK, yes, there are plenty of entries left pertaining to Edge. I should have said "functional remnants." Those pieces in my FE are dormant and don't cause any problems.

As for freezing, I've had that issue before. Can occur following a browser update, or an issue with the video driver. Sometimes, simply restarting or shutting down the computer will bring it back. Good thing OP fixed it, that's scary.
I'm suspecting the browser and Windows update possibly fighting over bandwidth. I've remember something like that happening over and over when I do my updates to my system restore image. I do it all at the same time and when I'm multitasking and get Windows update going and then at the same time get Brave to try updating, sometimes it says it can't. Doesn't freeze really though.

I had the same issue for a while. Turned out my power supply cables came loose and some of the pins weren't securely in place. Replaced them all with new ones and didn't have that issue anymore.

AGAIN: Not true at all. I have completely removed all instances, files, and support files for microsoft edge from my windows 10 system. I already told you it's not on my computer at all. I also have updates completely disabled so it will never be re-installed on my computer either. Nothing to do with edge exists on my machine. It is possible to completely remove everything to do with Microsoft Edge on our computers and never have it re-install. You just don't know how to do it. Please stop lying in the steam forums.

Okay I take it back its not solved?
I ran sfc and it did say Protection resources found corrupt things and repaired them. Okay, a reboot and still froze edge froze on start. Then I redid sfc, all good. Then I reenabled my laptops 1050 gpu. Then I just proceeded to do Windows cumulative update.

After all that, I retraced what I did previously & remembered I opened chrome first before opening Edge. Then it worked. So currently I have no slightest idea what fixed it or if it is even fixed at all. Maybe if I get annoyed enough I'll test this chrome edge workaround against opening edge normally after my next system reboot.

And for futher reference, I have three web browsers on this thing. Edge and Chrome both sync to my Gaccount but Opera opens fine but it doesnt sync to any Gaccount. And weirdest is that all of them are chromium but arent breaking the same way

Yes I just replicated it guys, I cannot open Edge without it freezing unless I open Chrome first . The only correlation between these two browsers is that they are both syncing to a Google account. I have a third chromium browser thats not connected to any account and that one works fine but these other two have something tangling them both.

The solution is to stop using Edge. It's a steaming pile of 💩 anyway.

Are you on Windows 11? If so, I think there's a setting in Settings app/Apps and Features that allows you to repair Edge browser. You click on the Edge box and there should be an option for that.

A little search turned up the suggestion of clearing the browser caches and histories (both). Did you try that?

Clearing it via the browser function can sign you out of various web sites so I would get a junk files cleaner temporarily to do it. You can try CCleaner free and then delete it from your system.
