Deck rear buttons riveted on
Whose idea was it on the newest (non OLED) model to have the rear buttons riveted on to the backplate? No way to remove and replace or keep them for a different backplate. Though, I could drill them out and just size up the screw head. I was hoping to keep these, rather than replace them.

With that said, I'd welcome a backplate that completely covers the rear buttons, maybe even add some finger grooves for grip.

All 3 of my Steam Decks is the same, and they are the older LCD ones as well. 1 512GB converted to 2TB, and 2 64GB converted to 2TB.

I've never had any issues with the back buttons, but if you're good with a dremel or tiny drill bit, I can easily see removing the plastic rivet caps and just create screw holes if need to remove/replace them.

You serious? There are 4x allen-key screws there.
Nope. The grill and buttons are plastic riveted on. And mine are the gen 1 versions.
As seen even as the replacement back.

Note: The back button faces (L4, R4, L5, and R5) are part of the back cover and cannot be separately removed.

Oh ok. Looked like actual screws there for sure. Pitty.

I don't think Steam Deck gen matters though.
While the OLED has some updated internals, the buttons and sticks are not changed.

But yea hopefully you are good with a dremel tool, or know someone who is if modding or making changes to parts that are riveted really matters to you.

Same here - that's why I was hoping to keep them - got the shell replacement for my deck. This is my second deck. The original one had regular screws in. I don't get the logic behind making it one piece. I was thinking the dremel, but not worth the time. The whole replacement took maybe 4 hours - with a short snack break between.

Are you sure? My 512GB one is the launch model version, and it has the plastic rivets as well.

You could be right.. I must be misremembering it all. The deck's been out about two years now, it feels. With the last one, I got the jsaux backplate - came with the three variations. Must have gotten that confused - spent a week across each of the button variations.

Oh, yep. That'd be it. Since the Jsaux has different button depth/height that can be changed out.

Probably cheaper to do that, it's usual to do a cost-down product increment after stabilising the initial release

Costs definitely. It would probably cost over $1 or more to outfit that with enough screws. Whereas the way the product actually is, that whole backplate with the buttons probably costs Valve 25-50 cents, if tbat

Mild disappointment. Those screws are like a few bucks for the hundred. But understandable.
