My wired 360 controller lasted forever. In fact, it's still fine. A little worn now, but I could plug it in and play right now if I wanted. Solid too.
All in all I'm very happy with my Series X controller. It doesn't creak under stress like my Xbone controller did, it's comfortable, it has Bluetooth for easy wireless use, the D-pad is nice. I have no complaints.
I'm still waiting for Valve to release a second version of the Steam Controller. basically a Steam Deck without the screen. Best controller I've ever used.
And yeah Microsoft branded prices are normal.
Take a look at PowerA Xbox controllers, slightly cheaper and they are Microsoft licensed
Just connect it with the proper USB cable and it'll work. Sony also has so that you can download drivers to it directly from the official site.

Scroll to the bottom and there should be a button for updating software for controller.
The only thing you might need to do is turn off the support through Steam when playing various games because then the game will detect it as a PS5 gamepad.
PS controllers get stick drift after a year or two xbox controllers get broken and not working buttons and triggers.
I have a little collection of busted xbox and PS4 controllers.
This year I thought I'v had enough with their crap and looked elsewhere and I am glad I did.
I'm not sure if it's the best, but it's the most compatible. Personally, I like the PS5 controller, especially for games that support Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers. It feels like next-gen features, and only one controller seems to do it well (at all?).
However, I've had various random problems with different controllers, and the Microsoft controller seems to be the only one that always works perfectly. The weirdest issue was with the PS5 controller on Armored Core 6 - with this controller, all the buttons felt sticky, as if the press was longer. I wouldn't have noticed something was off if I hadn't had an Xbox controller to compare.
Partial Support just means that it may require some input via Keyboard and/or Mouse during some point with the game and may not be entirely navigated via Controller.
I really like the PS5 controller, but most PC games with controller support only display glyphs for the ABXY buttons in the Xbox arrangement.
As long as you can get used to having the wrong buttons prompts appear, it's fine though.

Many games require DS4Windows while Microsoft controller just works.
I decided to pay extra and have both: a Sony and a Microsoft controller.
Returnal, The Last of Us and Alan Wake have full suport for ps5 controllers - including haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.
