So is STEAM buying me a new computer?
The only reason I ask this is because while I haven't noticed it until now and I understand the need to update things, but taking away the ability for people to use STEAM while using Windows 7 is just F'ed up! I cannot afford a new computer with higher windows, graphics and all that jazz. I am disabled and cannot work which means no money. I get a small amount of money a month that goes to paying my rent and other bills and providing what I can for my teen's schooling. Playing games on STEAM, that I PAID MONEY I REALLY COULDNT AFFORD TO, was really the only thing that brought me joy between the constant pain and forcing myself to struggle with life. So what, now I get to sit all day staring at a wall? Gee thanks. I already felt useless because I cant do the things I used to be able to, meaning I really cant do much of anything and now my money (that I saved up for a long time) I spent is now wasted. :steamsalty:

You had nearly a decade to update to Windows 10 for free.

You shouldn't run an unmaintained system anymore.

Linux is also an option, it is free.

You can install and use Windows 10 or 11 without a license key.

Just go install Win10 or a Linux distro.
Don't need a whole new PC.

No. Valve is obviously not buying you a new computer. These are the consequences for staying on an unsupported operating system.

Install Windows 10 or use Linux.

Use Linux

Steam will work on Linux. And using proton and various winetricks gets the job done. Sometimes as good as Windows, especially with AMD stuff

With advanced knowledge of Linux, which doesn't take long, I recommend learning on pop OS or Ubuntu and then jumping over to manjaro, Arch, then lfs, you can actually get higher returns even if running nvidia hardware

I got 7 frames more in cyberpunk 2077 with as good of hardware on Linux than I did with Windows. Thats because Linux uses hardly any memory.

For the record, the red warning is up for over 200 days. And probably over 100k posts are wasted about it on the forums.

Find the survival guide and follow it.

Your choice to continue running a 14 year old OS isn't Valve's problem to solve.

Updates/upgrades are a core part of the PC platform.

Systems, OS'es, software lose support. That doesn't cease to be the case on Steam.

The Steam subscriber agreement clearly outlines that Steam's system requirements may change over time, and that's something you accepted.

The system requirements for Steam in 2023 are a lot different than they were in 2003. Raising a stink because it happens to affect you isn't much of an argument. It's your choice whether to upgrade or not, but you're responsible for the consequences of refusing to upgrade. And none of this was a secret. When Windows XP/Vista support ended in 2019 any Windows 7 user who thought support would never end was fooling themselves. Valve never promised anyone perpetual support for their system/configuration.

You know upgrading to Windows 10 is free right?
Cathulhu 28. nov. 2023 kl. 10:10
No longer is. Microsoft discontinued that about 2-3 months ago.
https://www.zdnet.com/article/can-you-still-get-a-windows-10-upgrade-for-free/

While you can still do the software upgrade, your license no longer carries over. Windows 10 will be in a non-activated state.

Well they gave plenty of people time to upgrade, so i don't see this as a huge issue.

No, Valve (Valve is the company, Steam is just a software distribution service :steamfacepalm:) isn't going to buy you a new computer, nor would it even be necessary, Windows 7 isn't going to magically be the last OS your system can run, there is always an alternative.

The client will still run on Windows 7 after January but you'll gradually lose access to various things that depend on Google's CEF (i.e. web services, download servers, etc.), there are apparent workarounds but over time, using Steam on Windows 7 will become more difficult than on Linux because the client will become effectively broken and will probably get worse as they continue to update it.

Here are your choices:

1. You can make your own bootable Windows 10 media out of a USB flash drive using an ISO file that Microsoft provides here[www.microsoft.com] and install Windows 10. Unless your system is from the early 2000s at the latest (which I seriously doubt) and lacks drivers for Windows 10, then your system will run Windows 10 and it won't really be any slower than 7, because it's an absolute myth that 7 is faster, it's actually slower in almost every statistic.

2. You can install any Linux distro that peaks your interest. Linux Mint and Zorin OS are two options that are good for beginners that are just converting from Windows. Pop!_OS and Garuda Linux are two examples of good gaming distros. But there's far more options to choose from and many are designed to run on weak systems.

3. Choose to continue to do nothing as you have for the last decade and accept the consequences.

Of course you don't and even brag about it.

Where this legend originates? Quoting shills and other its-on-internet-so-must-be-true ahead? If your system is something like Sandy Bridge, yeah, you will pick up massive hit on performance. Compared to a W7 properly update-locked from spectre patches.

It may somewhat hold for skylake-ish but not much before. And hardware more recent than that could not run W7 in the first place (without heroic hacks hardly suggested by anyone).

And yeah, some people are that good they can properly run such an old system in good working order. And the just-buy-the-new and reinstall-on-first-hickup crowd is happy to order them on how to operate.

Windows 10 is free so what is the problem exactly? (Unactivated windows cant change wallpapers and has a watermark, but works just fine otherwise).

I literally installed windows 10 on a core 2 duo pc (from ~2007) once just to see if i could and it worked fine.

you dont need a new computer to upgrade to win10 or 11

a 2009 era machine is more then capable of running 10 or 11 (installed via rufus)

u dont even need to buy a windows license, windows is free to install and use (they just put a watermark in the corner and disable ability to change wallpaper)
