4070Ti with i9-9900K - Will this be a headeach?
Hello.
I am planning to upgrade by RTX 2080S to RTX 4070Ti with a i9-9900K on a 1080P. So will this be a severe bottleneck? My configuration is as follows

• CPU : Intel Core i9-9900K
• CPU : ASUS ROG Strix LC 360 AIO Cooler
• MB : ASUS ROG Maximus XI Formula Z390
• RAM : G.SKILL TRIDENT RGB 32GB ( 4 X 8GB ) DDR4-3200Mhz
• GPU : ASUS ROG Strix RTX 4070 Ti
• PSU : ASUS ROG THOR 850W PLATINUM
• M.2 : Samsung 970 EVO SSD 500GB - M.2 NVMe

Also what if I upgrade to a 2K or 4K monitor

RTX 2080 Super vs RTX 4070 Ti

Not sure why you wanted to upgrade it you are only playing 1080p. Your bottleneck is your monitor, assuming you are not playing competitively.

4070ti is a bit faster, pointless in 1080p. In higher resolution, just see how your 2080s handles it first.

there is always a bottleneck

if vsync is off
gpu at 100% lower graphic settings
gpu <90% cpu is most likely limiting

play and see, and mix settings to get the most of what you have

If leaning towards 4070 Ti then I'd get a newer Display too; such as 1440p @ 144 - 180 Hz w/ DP

some people want big fps while maintaining max graphic settings in game
try that on a 4k monitor with 250fps
let's see how well it goes for you

he didnt say refresh rate
there are 1080p 300+hz displays

First and foremost, wait until the Super versions[videocardz.com] have been released at the beginning of next year.

Is the monitor capable of VRR and what's the FPS (monitor's refresh rate) target?

Hardware Unboxed recently released a video discussing the positives of the AM4 platform (upgradeability) in the form of the performance differences between the Ryzen 7 3700X and the Ryzen 7 5800X3D. They compare the performance with the i9-9900K, Intel's contemporary product at the time of the release of the 3700X.

https://youtu.be/6UAES7F48EU

The data mentioned in this video - they paired the systems with the RTX 4090 - is trustworthy, up-to-date and shows the actual performance when being CPU-bottlenecked in a multitude of titles.
An indication of CPU-bottlenecking is an identical amount of FPS (and 1% Lows) in 1080p and 1440p. You see that behaviour in all the games shown in the video.

Subsequently, you can use Hardware Unboxed 4070 Ti's review video to see how many FPS are achievable when mostly GPU-bound (5800X3D).
They very likely used the same protocol for benchmarking, so data is comparable.

Watch Dogs: Legion, The Callisto Protocol, Far Cry 6, Hitman 3, Horizon Zero Dawn, Cyberpunk 2077, Halo Infinite, Shadow of the Tomb Raider are all titles seen in these 2 videos. They tested the 4070 Ti at 1440p and 4k.

Just for you, but only some titles; at 1440p:

Watch Dogs Legion: i9-9900k: 72/ 98 - 4070 Ti: 101/ 146
The Calisto Protocol: i9-9900k: 149/ 177- 4070 Ti: 104/ 122
Shadow of the Tomb Raider: i9-9900k: 136/ 159- 4070 Ti: 153/ 167
Hitman 3: i9-9900k: 121/ 144- 4070 Ti: 167/ 184
Far Cry 6: i9-9900k: 96/ 120- 4070 Ti: 133/ 161

Game title: CPU: 1% Low / Avg. FPS - GPU: 1% Low / Avg. FPS

CPU-bound in 4 of these 5 titles. But in 4 of these titles you see FPS in the excess of a 100. Is that good enough?

At 1080p, add 20-30% performance to the 4070 Ti. You'll then be heavily CPU-bound in all the titles.

I don't think the RTX 4070 Ti makes much sense in such an environment (1080p, 60Hz?). Maybe there are better alternatives to a 750 USD product with your current configuration? F.e.the RTX 4070 or the RX 7800 XT at 550 USD.

that card would be a great upgrade from a 2080s

This. I would not be buying an RTX 4070 Ti or RTX 4080 right now (they were always too bad to buy in my opinion to begin with, but that's more so the case now).

I admit I sort of say this on the grounds the RTX 2080 Super is by no means awful for 1080p and think you could live with it for a while longer, but I can't speak for how badly you want more performance. I myself upgraded to a RX 7800 XT and that was only at 1200p (same as 1080p just 120 pixels taller) and 60 Hz at that, and I'm still able to max it out and need more if I really want to... and that's in Minecraft of all things. So regardless of the resolution you're running, maybe you really want the performance and maybe you want it now. If you do, go for it.

As for the Core i9 9900K, it's fine. It won't get the performance a newer CPU will, but it won't prevent your upgrade from being an upgrade either. Yes there will be a bottleneck but there always is on every single system. Another member here had a Core i9 9900 (non-K I think) and upgraded to a RTX 4070 (non-Ti mind you) and says it was a pretty big uplift from the GTX 1080 before it. In my mind you're making a not too dissimilar change (just that you're slightly higher on the CPU as well as starting and ending GPU spots) so it should be fine. If and when you later want more performance, then you can change the CPU.

I would just hold on using the 2080 gpu at 1080p until the RTX 40 SUPER varients come out. Should be out very early 2024

I have a 9900K with a 2080 Ti running two monitors, main monitor is 1440 180Hz, the second monitor is 1080 240Hz although I upscale it to 1440 and everything runs great with no problems at all.

You running a 9900K with a 2080 S on 1080 shouldn't really need to update just yet. I don't think you'd have much problem running a monitor at 1440, I wouldn't go 4K, I think 1440 is a good sweet spot.

So, I would wait until Nvidia releases the Supers whenever they come out and see how much they cost and how they run. I'd probably even wait until the 5000 series comes out as I believe there's still plenty of life in your 2080 S for a while longer.

I would buy the monitor first to find out whether you even need a new card. Once you have done that then you can accurately work out what extra power you need.

Not really, 4070ti can barely do 1440p on some newer titles.

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol: WHAT?!?!

A 4070 Ti is more than capable of running newer games at 1440p

Well it's generally faster then my 3080 Ti which had no problems running every game just fine and smooth at 4K. WTF benchmarks you looking at???
