upgrade question

Hi, i was doing some research on whether i could upgrade my cpu and learned that i could upgrade up to an i9-9900. right now i am running an i5 9400F with 32gb ram and an rtx 2060 (i plan to upgrade this later). should i upgrade to an i7 or i9?

What Motherboard and Power Supply you have?

Might not be worth it as many games might also need a better GPU.

You should upgrade your GPU first.
You can't do anything with a 2060.

If you really want to push it i would aim for the i9-9900KS. But you would need good cooling and probably a BIOS update. The other options are not that thrilling.
Problem is they all seem to be rather expensive. That platform seems to be in high demand.
So from a financial perspective it does not make much sense.

Because of the B chipset, an unlocked (K) CPU is rather a bad investment. The multiplier is not accessible and therefore mitigates the benefits of a K CPU over a locked one (non-K).
Furthermore, with these higher TDP processors, the question arises if the power stages and VRM of your board are able to deliver the power and sustain these high currents without thermal throttling.

What's the Power Limit (PL2) of the B360M Bazooka? Can you increase it? Some B360 boards prohibit increasing PL1, PL2 and Tau.
What's the PL2 power and time (Tau) ceiling before thermal throttling occurs? You might find an archived discussion on r/Intel or r/MSI.

The only scenario I see worth a 'sidegrade'; if the limited amount of cores without HT of the 9400F (6C/6T) causes bad performance, like stutters or limits the performance in games that scale past 6 threads and are not limited by your GPU.
If nothing of that occurs, don't upgrade. But if it does, get one of these three on the second-hand market:

i7-8700 for less than 125USD
i7-9700(F) for less than 150USD
i9-9900 for less than 250USD

A better GPU for what? The rtx 2060 fully supports Alan Wake 2 and plays it well too. That's a brand new AAA game that just released.

so you can just buy a proper sustem likely with an amd cpu.

k6-2 and thunderbird
after that only intel upto my current 1600 euro i7 6950c
when all that amd had was that terrible fx cpu..

how things have changed..

even in the k6-2 days you went amd cause it was more banfg for buck imtel still was better just also much more expensive.. amd owning the perfornamce crown.. a new reality to me too.
