Sata m.2
I just built a new pc with a gigabyte b650 ds3h motherboard. From reading the manual after the purchase, I only realised the board doesn't support sata m.2 drive, it only support nvme m.2. i didn't know there is a difference between the 2.

Is it common for a mobo to only support nvme m.2?

Lucky i don't have a sata m.2, but i know it was quite common a few years ago when the nvme price was a bit higher.

As a comparison, the mobo still supports ps/2 mouse and keyboard that was available 20 years ago, why would it not support m.2 sata that was common 5 years ago?

The difference is that nvme uses pci-e lanes (a direct connection to the cpu), while sata uses the sata protocol which is a bus interface (a non-direct connection to the cpu). NVME M.2 drives typically have sata as a backup, in case you try to use a bunch of devices and run out of lanes.

In short, it should work.

If your motherboard cannot detect SATA M.2 drives, then you'll need a SATA to M.2 adapter and a SATA port to plug it into.
think you will have to be a bit more specific, there are quite a few different b650 boards...

They were popular in laptops due to their form factor when pcie drives were much more expensive. Nobody in their right mind, then or now, would put one in a desktop.

I build my old pc 5 years ago, first gen Ryzen, i was looking at the ssd options, i went for sata 2.5 inch ssd, as i wanted to leave the m.2 free just in case i want to add nvme later. I would imagine some people would have chosen m.2 sata, given it costs the same and m.2 has less cable.

Why was it a bad choice for desktop?
