Is cherry MX red suppose to feel mushy like a membrane KB?
First time using a cherry MX red and it's the cherry G80 3000S full size.

Is red switch suppose to feel that way?

Still, it's way better and easier to type on than my previous galax with blue switch. This garbage is way too stiff and way too loud, and within a few months started to have multiple registration issues.

No, It's not supposed to, probably just how the KB was made

So what is it supposed to feel like? People say reds are noisy but mine is not. Surely it couldn't be a fake cherry KB, right?

Note: It's not the silent red version. Just plain red.

Doesn't sound right to me, reds are a bit loud and decently stiff. Only silent reds tend to be a bit mushy and quiet.

Almost no mechanical switch is that bad, MX Silent Reds were garbage though.

AFAIK the Reds are supposed to be quiter, but less tactile feel compared to Brown and or Blue.

A good guide is found here - https://steelseries.com/blog/which-mechanical-switch-should-you-use-298

I checked the box. It says MX red US international next to a bunch of barcodes.

However there are a lot of chinese text on the manual and brochure so I suppose it's made by cherry for the chinese market.

I think I can confirm that this is for the asian market. But the white and black version sound so damn different.

But at $32 USD I'm not complaining. Just curious as to why it's so silent.

This is what mine sounds like.

This white one is way louder and more clicky.

I triple checked and it's the right one. So I'm thinking perhaps they mislabelled the silent red as regular red? I don't know.

Anyway it feels great to type on. A million times better than clicky blues.

personally i like the tactile feel of browns with the shorter pre travel than the blues and
the no click.what your describing sounds about right for that switch.
heres a good read.

Alright, that's good to know. I just love the no-bump feeling on the red since I spent most of my life using membrane KB.

And it feels good to type on.

if you like the mushy feel, there are oring kits you can put over the switches to make them have the membrane feel and remove the clack sound when they bottom out

pop off a keycap to see if it has an oring you can remove

There is little clack sound in this so it's fine. Besides the keycaps look really hard to remove in this one.

a clickity sound, is the switch contacting, the clack is the switch bottoming out
press slowly, to only hear clickity, press hard and fast to hear both

It sounds and feel ok to me. It really is a joy to type on. And it's relatively silent. I'm not sure if there is sound dampening in this.

You guys should buy one of this to try it out. It's pretty cheap anyway although it's for the asian market.

There is no rattling keys or that stupid pinging sound common in other KB.
r.linder Dec 30, 2023 @ 9:17am
KBs with better construction, actual sound dampening in the chassis, and good switches (not Cherry) are so much better even though some of them end up costing more than even some of the most expensive "complete" keyboards on the shelf from brands like Mountain.

Exhibit A: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3125266539

Cherry switches aren't that good these days, the clones and originals from other brands like Akko, EPOMAKER, TTC, Gateron, Kailh, etc. have surpassed Cherry. Gateron's Aliaz silent switches are actually almost silent in a board that's properly set up for noise, Box Kailh are just a tad nicer than Cherry and I really liked their Blues compared to Cherry's Blues, and I've used both EPOMAKER Flamingos and Akko Cream Black Pro V3s which I vastly prefer over any Cherry switch I used in the past.

With linear and tactile switches, the majority of the sound doesn't even come from the switch itself, it comes from the keycaps and the keyboard itself. A case without any dampening will always sound pretty rough. When MX SIlent first launched only on Corsair, I had the first Strafes that had them, and they were TERRIBLE. Terribly mushy, not very quiet, and the spacebar was a regular Red switch and was so loud that it ruined the whole point of the board.
