IEMs vs gaming headsets

I would like people's opinions/thoughts on in Ear Monitors vs gaming headsets such as good/bad, sound quality, surround sound etc.
Kinda tired of wearing a headset while gaming, but I also sit on my couch when playing, so no clue what I would use for a mic that way.

The problem with most EarBuds though is going to be the lack of max volume and also the overall sound range, as well as lack of Bass.

Could easily buy a lapel clip-on Mic for cheap and those will be better then the Mic that is onboard any Headset.

I currently use HyperX Clouds but feel the surround sound is lacking, even with ArtIsWar's sound fix.

Not when it comes to surround sound for cheap.

Speakers are better for Movies and Music.

Many games have built in surround sound and Headphones are more/less needed for proper audio immersion.

Wired IEM ( * not a wireless earbud * ) for sound quality. It is likely to require major EQ correction.
Over ear phones for sound stage. Should work fine out of the box for the most.

I don't know what are you talking about, those can make very deep and very detailed bass while also having less fatigue. But that depends on the technology used. Loudness is also not a problem, can sound good quiet and loud (with EQ correction), but you may need an amplifier, depending on the model used.

I'm using this, it may sound too "private" due to small sound stage in some models, but the sound positioning is correct.

The sound you get from Hi-Fi home theater heavily depends on the game's mix. Some games has a good wide range mix(RE2), some has a reference mix (Naughty dog games with full range setting) and some has a generic TV-compatible sound(older CoD series). The same mix problem applies to headphones if you play with loud volume.

On the other hand, virtualization is lacking proper room reflections so is likely to sound somewhat limited compared to real cinema or home theater. Also, since you use virtual audio devices you're likely to have an additional latency which may break immersion and destroy localization accuracy in PvP. You may try ASIO Link Pro to reduce latency to something like ~30+ ms, which is still not that great.

Any way, you could try some popular solution with good imaging capability to see can it fit your ears and expectations or not. This is a path many people went through already before you, finding reviews won't be a problem. There is even people who review IEMs strongly for gaming purpose.

The resulting impulse response doesn't include any room reverb, so you may try adding your own. It also might sound better with earphones/IEMs.

Would the headset being usb be a cause of lacking surround vs a headset using the smaller plug such as the headphone plug? Something I never looked into.
