Is anything safe with those new style connectors? There are still reports of meltdowns. It certainly seems to have been a bad idea of NVIDIA's to go for such a small connector.
Don't have one of the affected GPUs but as I hadn't seen this mentioned here yet I thought it could be useful for those that do.
When it comes to the 12VHPWR connector you just have to ask yourself one question. Am I smart enough to plug the cable in correctly? If your answer is yes then you are perfectly safe using the 12VHPWR connector. Cablemod selling defective adapters is another issue.
