800 DPI is the accepted standard, for ~1080p. Also make sure Mouse Acceleration is turned off.
higher can make using desktop or fps shooters difficult with no precision
if the game supports raw input, it will ignore windows acceleration and smoothing settings
Being able to reach across the entire screen with a single turn of your wrist is a good start. (You should not be straining your wrist in the slightest though.)
If you have to move your arm, or reposition your wrist to another location to get a cursor across the screen, that's not good.
Everything should be done from the wrist. Or by bending your fingers, when moving a cursor vertically.
And Windows doesn't natively control it, so if the mouse doesn't have dedicated buttons to adjust, you'll need the manufacturer software.
and my window mouse setting motion pointer speed
in the middle w/enhanced pointer precision checked.
and set the in game mouse faster or slower if needed.
for me its all about the head shots and with these settings i rarely miss.
with a logitec G502 proteus.butter smooth with no jankiness
habing large hands i like them larger tghan many are mane.. and i akso like them flatter as i rest my hand morw on the mouse and having to steeo or high a hill is uncomfortable too..
as for dpi 1200-1600always worked well for me for decennia
i play strategy games many turned based.. no 300 clicks per minute but i do long sessuons.
so it needs not be aa light and speedy as those thar play shooters need
what i do wnt is the right buttons.. not all mouses have the 2 left sidebutton or a scrollwheel thats akso a third buttobn
and some add unnecceceiry 3d button.. or sidebuttons on ybe righr that obly get in the way.
I always try to match my sensitivity for everygame. In CS2 I use 1.31 in game and 800DPI.
I own a roccat taito and 1 full sweep from side to side is a 360 in game for me.
Some people may recommend higher DPIs because "its too slow" but you gotta remember its you playing the game not the mouse so if its not fast enough then you'll need to move faster.
I've always found them to be great set to 800 DPI for the desktop and can move the cursor across my 32" 1440p monitor with a flick of my wrist with ease. I will also lower the sensitivity in games down to a point which I feel is perfect for me. This varies from game to game though and I'll usually end up somewhere between 1 and 2 but things will be different for you, you'll just have to find that sweet spot on desktop then tweak each game until you're happy.
