Intel to AMD: Clean Windows installation question

Swapping over to a 7800x3d. Can I just use my existing installation of windows and select reset pc to do a clean install that way by not keeping any files, or is it better to start totally new using the media creation tool?

Here's the great thing about your situation. You can toss the existing installation into the new system and see if you're happy or not. If you are, great. And if not, you can do all that clean install, purist stuff.

Windows is pretty good about it. For perspective the Wife's PC is running Windows 11 on an i7 12700k, but the same install was once a Windows 7 install on an i5 2500k. But a Windows 10 upgrade, and then moving to an i5 8600k, and then later on updated to her current PC. It's been something like 7-8 years since she's had a clean install and that's OK as long as everything still works and performs well. You always have an option to do a clean install if something goes catawampus. And it's very nice to not have to do any of that unnecessarily.

it will work but dont forget to remove any old chipset drivers and install the latest from amd

I would personally do a full REAL fresh Windows installation changing out core components like that and not even consider just carrying over a Windows install like that. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night.

You don't need a reinstall or reset. Just make sure to install chipset drivers for the new thing. Also you'll probably need reactivation.

But lot of people here have the mantra of "clean install" as a cure-all and to be done on first sneeze.

No need to reinstall OS if it's Win10 or 11.

Just wipe out all the drivers from the old Motherboard and then wipe chipset and gpus using DDU in safe mode.

Then shutdown and do the hardware swap.

Once back in Windows, download + install all latest drivers for everything onboard the new Motherboard and then install GPU Driver fresh again.

Any time you change the motherboard you ideally should run a clean install.

1-2 mobo gen, can just update drivers and be ok, but more than that or swapping amd-intel a new os install is needed

Yeah, by people who are happy to waste others' time and other resources for less then sound reasons (aka FUD).

DDU and similar tools are sometimes needed where the hardware is unchanged: the same device ID drags a number of candidate drivers, something old that dodged removal may slip in.

But if you change mobo, then all the IDs will be different and drivers belonging to the previous mobo will just sit on the bench.

And the real danger to the drivers comes not from the switch but from windows update that may replace them.

I did a full clean from scratch install. Went ok but I have to reinstall again because the MS store doesn’t work despite me trying EVERYTHING to get it function.

Clean installs are generally good to do anyways. Get rid of junk and start fresh.
