Horrible fps drops with GTX860m
My laptop is the lenovo Y50 2014 model 1080p tn screen without touch. my 860m is the 4gb edition.

usually i get about 150 fps in games like csgo and tf2 at max settings, but recently, i somehow only get 70fps, which is really bad.

as for other games, i used to have 30fps at 900p med-high with the division, now i get 8-14 fps at the lowest settings (occasionally into slideshow fps).

This is really annoying, and i am only building my gaming desktop in june, so i really hope to fix it fast. i know for certain that its my gtx860m in use, not my integrated graphics. my temps are quite high, but i have gotten higher without fps drops before, so there must be something wrong.

could it be the latest nvidia driver? had problems since installing it, but even downgrading the driver did not improve my fps.

Wipe the driver out completely; reboot as needed
download and use stable ones like 361.91 or 362.00
and custom install > choose clean

well yes i always clean install drivers

which of the drivers is more stable with all games, espcially the new games like the division

Check your system temp maybe its overheating
and you also can check the nvidia control panel put it on default settings

while it is getting pretty hot, there are times in the past when i've played at higher temps withouth fps drops.

if its to do with the thermal paste, then i wont be able to fix it, because i dont have time to actually experiment things since my igcse;s are starting in weeks (only going to play games when i have time or want to relax). and i will only ge tthe thermal paste together with the parts for my new desktop in june

it's not necessarily that the cpu overheats it also could be the gpu or ram.
or dust build up

you can try to download and run http://www.gputemp.com/
and https://www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/
to check if the temp is ubnormal
if your system overheats and will keep overheating you will exprience more issues to the point of hardware failure
so i would suggest looking in to it.

there is a remove dust option and i use the clean dust option regulary (thought it might not actually remove dust)
my temps are pretty normal most of the times, though it could get slightly higher than usual when playing graphics+cpu intensive games, but csgo and tf2 are not that intensive and dont cause overheating.

i'll just surrender myself to lower fps for the moment, because i cant play much due to igcses anyway, and soon this will (hopefully) not be a problem when i get a gtx1070/1080 (or whatever they will name it)

Tried the past drivers i've used and also made sure the temps are normal. getting drops to 40fps (at 900p) in tf2, a game which i normally get 120 or more fps at 1080p.

Could it be some undetectable malware in my system? or just something wrong with my hardware?
dont want to do a clean install, at least not now.

860M is not good enough for most things (especially heavy resource games) at 1080p

i know, but the fact that it gets horrible drops now makes me wonder if the thermal paste has worn out (yet temps seems normal in some games)
i remember how happy i was to get this 860m after upgrading from a 610m, and now i am raging about how ♥♥♥♥ is is. I think in two years time, i might be also raging about how bad the gtx 1070/1080 is

The paste should last the life of the laptop. It might degrade enough to slightly affect temps; but it should not degrade so badly that the laptop overheats and/or throttles because of this.

If anything, a laptop's fan will need replacing every couple years; depending on use.

What NVIDIA GPU driver you using? People complain because newer drivers do not help (sometimes hinder or bring more issues) for users with GPUs like the 800M series.

Monitor all your Temps (CPU, GPU, etc.) during gaming and see if it is reaching beyond 85-90*C; if so, then you most likely experiencing poor FPS because the CPU/GPU are throttling to actually keep from over-heating. This throttle means they auto-downclock, the system can still function, but not with demanding tasks/apps when this is occurring. So please, monitor and check all the temps.

If it is time to replace any internal cooling fan(s), then this means taking the laptop apart, at which, yes it would be a good time to clean the old TIM from the CPU/GPU cores, and heatsink bottoms, and re-apply fresh TIM

Make sure the system has the "NVIDIA high performance" GPU as the Global Default, to ensure games run using this. You also always need to change a few other settings in NVIDIA Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings:

- Power Management = Prefer Max Performance
- Threaded Optimization = On

Others:
- PhysX = GPU name

OS Power Options:
- High Performance
