Problems with asus z97k boot order
I have a z97k motherboard and connected to it a 120Gb SSD (with windows installed) and a 3Tb HDD (with a 500Gb partition with linux mint and the rest is NTFS for storage, also the mint bootloader is installed here). Because I mainly use windows and not so often linux, I wanted that when I boot normally from power button, Windows will start, if I insert a USB stick with a live cd of mint, I can boot linux. However the boot order in the bios is behaving really strangely:

-first there are multiple ubuntu entries like if I had installed ten disks on my PC, like this: https://i.stack.imgur.com/NrWD0.jpg

-secondly some times, if I set the USB stick as the first device in boot order, when I shutdown it will put it as last device (even if the usb port is the same) and sometimes it will remember to set it as the first, but even in this case it will create two entries, like this: https://i.stack.imgur.com/IjKVx.jpg

When I try to boot from these one will either crash the bios or restart, the other will boot normally.

Does anyone else have this problem or I have a bugged BIOS? And if it's like this, could a BIOS update help?

Newer UEFI Motherboard (non junk oem ones) like the ones u buy for DIY builds; the BIOS has UEFI Mode options. This will dictate how overall booting works.

If nothing is formatted as "GPT" then u should be fine using "Legacy UEFI Mode"

It "could" be a bug in your situation though.
Look in your BIOS > System Info for the current BIOS version; then cross-check that with the ASUS model website here: https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Z97K/HelpDesk_Download

Please check out the "FAQ" section there as well.
But please ensure this is your exact board! I don't want to suggest u get bios or drivers, etc. from here if I am somehow linking the incorrect board model page.

Every drive in my system (including the USB stick) is formatted using GPT and in fact I already use UEFI (otherwise windows wouldn't even boot). I already thought about a BIOS upgrade, but I'm a bit skeptical I wouldn't like to risk messing things up

Well Full UEFI allows for GPT; UEFI can't change modes for an OS that depends on that mode; otherwise u have to reinstall the OS.

Why are people skeptical about BIOS?
If there is a later official version, that is the one to have applied.
