I have motherboard there say 64GB of ram is max
So is not safe to go over it?

If you do, it just won't recognize that you have more than that at best, and will fail to boot with an error at worst. It won't cause lasting damage, except to your wallet.

I wish they would stop BS'in around with consumer motherboards and give us quad channel support and give us CPUs that can handle all dimms maxed out. WTF is the point of these $200+ motherboard when they never support everything all at once like the brand maker would claim.

what cpu and board?
often its the cpu that has the ram limit

6th-7th gen i series have 64g limit
8-12th 128g
Well yea CPu is the higher limit for overall RAM max limit but then you are bound by the limits for the particular Motherboard.

So if my CPU supports 128GB RAM and my Motherboard only has 2x DIMM slots, then it's max support is limited to 64GB

What board says 12GB Maximum RAM on it?

Maybe 16 or 32 GB but not 12.
LGA1366. 1st gen Intel had 3/6 dimm slots. The ram limits are based on what's been tested and certified, just as is the case with min reqs in video games. The reason it varies with time, ram with more density becomes available in the future, which wasn't physically present at the mainboard's certification, and at this point it's anybody guess if it will work. In our case 16/32gb is nice but they now make 24GB dimms, Will it work? Who knows. If the mainboard maker cares enough he will update the mainboard firmware to ensure official compatibility.

why do you even need that much ram? even the most demanding aaa games recommend 32gb
Ironically, i REALLY need 64GB ram right now for a certain game. Like, really.

Oh triple channel. Then the limit would have been
24 (4gb x 6)
48 (8gb x 6)
or 96 (16gb x 6)

Sure you might be limited to 12GB if using 6x 2GB but not the total maximum the board supports overall.

Well, yes and no, here is a google link with a picture from an asus manual listing 12gb max memory supported https://superuser.com/questions/732697/ram-limited-to-12gb-by-motherboard. They can't predict compatibility issues from using a future-made ram, such as someone using a buttload of *cough* 16gb ddr3 sticks, ( i think it's still the future lol) thus they aren't listing them in the specs, and trash mainboards with a crappy firmware did indeed only do 12gb. Hence OPs question can't be easily answered.
