Are chipset drivers necessary for AMD?

I recently reinstalled Windows on my computer as it was having problems. One of the problems was that it gave me a signal and other times it didn't (totally random). This is not the first time this has happened to me, so this time I have decided not to install any drivers on my own and let Windows do everything. However, today I remembered that the Chipset drivers existed and if I remember correctly these came with security patches. Could they negatively affect my computer? (errors for example)

I never had to learn it the hard way fortunately, since I dodged the more problematic ones (*cough*VIA*cough*), but I did learn a long time that when it comes to chipsets, anything non-Intel is best served by downloading drivers direct from the source and keeping them up to date.
