MSI MPG B550 Gaming Plus with a R5 1600
I've done a little bit of looking around, but no really solid proof that some b550 boards will work with first Gen Ryzen.

I got a R5 1600 a few days ago with a cheap a320 board for a build I was gonna throw together for a media server, I had a B550 board already, decided to install the 1600 and it works to my surprise. I would imagine the R5 3400g would work on this board as well despite in bold words that its not supported on the box lol.

Wonder what other x570 b550 boards work with first gen, Im afraid to update the bios on this thing at this point, might loose support.

Check from manufacturer s site online . usually Support->CPU
Yeah, the CPU is not on the list, hence why I posted what I posted....

So what at this point are your questions?
Basically there is no reason to update the BIOS any further if using such an older model CPU. The more updated bios revisions usually are designed specifically for Ryzen 3xxx and 5xxx and yes, might actually cut off support for CPUs such as Ryzen 1st Gen.

It's not a question. Its a Discussion, know the difference, theres a reason I got you blocked. And no, B550 1st gen is not suppose to be supported at all, same with x570, why I posted it up

Can they work on B550 boards; YES some but not all
Are they officially supported; NO
With B550 or X570 it makes more sense to install a CPU that actually has PCIE 4.0 support.

Here is a Ryzen 1700 running on an MSI B550 board back in 2021

The tech guy here is selling me B550 Aorus, the problem whenever I search about this board in specific. I get results for B550 Elite. Although it say it do support Ryzen 5 5600X and PCi Express 3.0 compatibility to RTX/GTX cards. But still don't know if is referred to B550 Aorus.

Ask MSI about it. They do answer inquiries.

The thing is that some boards might have newer BIOS which removed support for older CPUs to add support for newer variants like the 5600x3D.

Looking here, it never said it removed support at all:

https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/MPG-B550-GAMING-PLUS/support

But then again, it could be the CPU was never supported or meant to be supported but it works (the worst a BIOS should do is flash a light or refuse to boot, but you never know).

Since you are already using an unsupported CPU on that board, it really is best to ask MSI about it. They may not be aware that they "accidentally" support the CPU, as the CPU support list does not include what CPUs work -- but what CPUs support ALL FEATURES and work in an OPTIMIZED way.

There may be limited support for those CPUs, hence why it's not on the list.

That said, it's a bad idea not to get the security updates on the AMD boards. I know since I did submit two CVEs... :steamhappy:

All B550 boards support he 5600x out of the box and all bios versions and should work with PCIE 4.0, unless set it bios.

Unless you meant the R5 1600. Yeah it will only support or work with PCIE 3.0 which is fine, I personally don't need it with such system, its just a media server, everything is on HDD's other than the OS which is on a sata SSD.

Got a Vega 64 in there for Transcoding, which could still do it just fine even if it was on 1x. Don't need much bandwidth for that.

Then request a CPU-Z Validation link from the motherboard in question.

B550 Aorus is Gigabyte; but this line has many boards; Pro, Elite, and Master
@OP, you'll need to check which BIOS/UEFI version you have on that board and reference the manufacture documentation on supported CPUs. Essentially when AMD launched that series of chipset (from the 400 series to the 500 series) they did not have enough space for the specified NVRAM to profile all of the CPUs/generations that were available on AM4. So they had to prune older CPU support in order to add support for the newer 5000 series CPUs.

I don't recall any of the B550 boards having support for first gen Ryzen as they launched and shipped with firmwares to support Ryzen 5000. I do recall hearing people report that some specific B550 AM4 boards shipped at launch with old firmware / old AGESA so you'd get an error when trying to install a Ryzen 5000 CPU and you'd then need to do the BIOS flashback to update the firmware to support that gen CPU (and rendering support for older 1st and 2nd gen Ryzen disabled). But none of that was or seems to have been well documented so you are kinda at a "install it and see if it works" standpoint now.

Also, of note that just slapping it in and it successfully booting doesn't mean it "works". You may find the system will crash or have seemingly random issues.

Well, 1st gen ryzen is not anywhere in their support documentation, And its pretty stable, Got windows on it atm, running IBT for a few hours to know for sure, was able to get my 3200mhz ram kit to 3600mhz on it so far a dirty 3.6ghz all core at 1.21v, still stressing it make absolute sure.

But yeah it was just slap in and see, I had the board and had the CPU. Idk how many cheap R7 1700 and 1800's I passed up on just for the sake of not having or willing to spend money on earlier chip sets and I haven't been able to find even a R5 3600x for under $100 in this area or where im willing to drive to.

Got this 1600 paired with a Vega 64, a 5 port sata 3 card, and a 5g nic, works great so far, though this system is purely going to be used for my Media server, I got a separate NAS box so I don't care if an OC becomes suddenly unstable, its mostly a spare part rig anyway.

Was just surprised it worked with out any problems despite everything saying it wont.

Just for clarity, you're running the Intel Burn-In utility for it? I honestly didn't even know that would run on non-Intel hardware. Pretty cool to know (I haven't used it much as I've been using Passmark BIT since around 2008 with version 4 or 5 iirc).

Personally I'd recommend downloading the Passmark Burn-In Test[www.passmark.com] with the free trial and running its test for CPU @90%, memory @90%, along with the 2D and 3D GPU tests; Letting that run overnight. That should stress the CPU IO and memory controller and expose most potential issues you'd expect to see with the system given the unsupported nature of the configuration.

Anyway, cool that it at least appears to be working for your intended use case.

Oh yeah, its slower on AMD of course, but it hammers the CPU and memory pretty hard still and will detect if the CPU isn't fully stable, I use to use it on even the older FX stuff.

Right now its running at 3.8ghz all core and has lasted for 2 hours, gonna let it go most likely all night.

I'll have to look into the Passmark Burn Test, I don't use Prime95 anymore, its been years.

Cause Intel Burn Test doesn't require any specific CPU. It's not even an Intel constructed application. It was made by a 3rd party many years ago. It's what I've used on every CPU since AMD AM2 CPUs and Intel Skylake.
