PSU swapping question
So I've just ordered a 7900xtx as an upgrade to my 6800xt and to give myself a bit more headroom I've also ordered a 1000w psu as an upgrade to the current 850w

My question is that with them both being fully modular can I just swap out the actual unit and plug all the original cables straight into it as opposed to having to swap them all out? Or is that a no go with them both being different brands?

Current psu is a corsair rm850, the new one is an asus rog strix for reference

you will have to swap cables too.

if its modular, you need to keep all the cable for each psu separate

they may use the same connectors, but there is no standard for the pinouts
each psu even ones from the same mfg can change them at any time

using the wrong cable can damage hardware, putting 12v to 3.3v or grounding a power rail

Thanks to both of you for your answers, I suspected as much. Will run the new card on the 850w for now and swap out the psu at the weekend

You definitely do not want to mix cables, unless you like the smell of fried electronics and possibly fire.

The primary reason is not all PSUs are wired the same. I would never even suggest you use the same cables from modular PSUs of the same brand. For example two different models of modular PSUs from Corsair. You as the user/consumer can't be sure how they are wired up internally and thus can't be sure that modular cables will work. Sure the ends that connect to your components might "appear" the same and may connect fine given the keyed connectors. But how the wires align with connections inside the PSU might differ.

It should definitely be common sense to never attempt this when the psu brands and/or models differ.

It's possible with the same manufacturer. You would have to check what they say if you just upgraded model X850 to X1000.
If you go to a complete new brand you either have to replace all cables or check each individual cable if it uses the same pins.

Even within the same manufacturer it's not always guaranteed, you still need to check.

Yea I means let's take Corsair for example. You might be OK to share cables between an RMX 750 and 850 but that doesn't mean you'll be able to share those with higher end models even from the same series such as RMX 1000 or 1200; etc
